ESSM the real score?

Does the ESSM missile require ICWI(continous wave illumination x band midcourse) to home in on a target?
Does that mean also that if you got 1 illuminator it can only engage 1 target?
Ive read somewhere that the the new ESSM’s have autopilot feature which means it only needs the illuminator in its terminal guidance. So that if you have only 1 illuminator you can engage multiple targets. Hoe many illuminators do you need yo engage say 6 simultaneous targets?
