Etihad Airways – What are they like?

There is a chance that we could be booking our next long haul trip to Thailand in the next few days.

One of the airlines coming up at a good price is the quite new national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, Etihad Airways.

The flight to Bangkok would operate via Abu Dhabi and incur a 90 minute wait outbound and just an hour inbound.

Their A330 aircraft which would fly all flights from Heathrow – Abu Dhabi – Bangkok – Abu Dhabi – Heathrow is equipped with PTVs and a wide selection of entertainment.

Very few reviews available online unfortunately. Anyone flown with Etihad and know what could be expected on board?

Thanks

In terms of inflight service and food Etihad is good. There are PTVs but they only had 8 channels maybe more now? Aircraft are clean, relatively young and in good condition but the decor is a bit bland. They have been offering cheap tickets as low as £300 on the LHR-BKK route with an Abu Dhabi stop over. I would rate them slightly above GF on the long haul flights. They still need some refinement though.

Just a correction Qatar have been flying the 330 into Bangkok since the end of march now with audio and video on demand. I would prefer them to be honest.

Friend of mine has just joined them. Could be the next big thing in the Middle East…alternatively he might be knocking on easyJet’s door in 18 months! He’s given up MyTravel A330’s and a start date with Virgin for Etihad hoping for a quick command. Would I have done it? Never in a million years!

have you tried the airline’s website as well…

Thanks for that, tonyosborne.

I logged onto etihadairways.com earlier this afternoon and was pleasantly suprised by what I saw. They appear to offer a very above average service at a bargain price. Seat pitch is said to be “generous”, but there is not an actual figure, PTVs complete with 6 television channels to choose from, 11 audio channels and an assortment of meals and fine wines to choose from. Of course, all included in the price.

Their fleet currently stands at two Airbus A330-200s and an A340-300(?). So, unlike similar airlines, like Qatar for example, you’re flying on something new all the way. My parents flew Qatar to Bangkok last year and loved the LHR-DOH flights but from DOH-BKK it was all a bit cheap ‘n’ nasty because the A300 they were on, offered little in the way of entertainment.

As I said above, the family has changed their mind because it is the rainiest month of the year. However, I’m still considering it.

The prices (I’m sure you’ll all agree) are unbelievable:

* 10 nights flying with Etihad Airways via Abu Dhabi = £499
* 20 nights flying with Etihad Airways via Abu Dhabi = £588

Based on departures between 1st and 20th September 2004.

Pretty special! And we’ve stayed at the 4* Hotel many times now, so we know what to expect.

Etihad is another of the Middle East’s ‘Premium’ airlines, high quality, good services etc with reletively young fleet. There is a bit of info about them on Pprune.net in the Middle East section. I suspect as with any new airline, it cannot afford a bad reputation expecially so soon after start-up, so it will probably be pretty damn good.
I know it will probably be biast but have you tried the airline’s website as well…

You just love rubbing it in don’t ya 😉 Why I oughta mail bomb ya! Luckylucky Sod. You have no idea how fortunate you are. :p

Anyway, jesting aside, I’ve not heard much about Etihad. Though they seemd to be reliable.

Not so lucky anymore 😡

Looks like September is possibly the worst time to travel. Although temperatures are high, it’s the peak of the rainy season. I’m not giving up that easily though. I’ll go alone if I have to! 😀

We’re also getting information for our next 4 week trip in March again. Flying with the one… the only… Thai Airways International… Yippee!
