Recently me and a friend had a discussion about what woul;d make the perfect Euro destroyer, the rules were obvious, evrything had to be of european origin and actually had to exist.
In the end we came to this conclusion,
A type 45, with full Sylver A70 VLS loadout (72 cells, upgrade potential of actula T-45) loaded with a combination of Astor 15/30 and Naval scalpe depending on the mission
8 Exocet MM40 block 3s carried in the same style launchers as the Qahir class corvettes of Oman to reduce radar cross section.
For closs in defence/ciws we would use the Oerlikon-contraves Millenium ahead 35mm naval mount, selected for the Danish combat support ships.
The main gun would be the Oto-Melara 127/54 in the light weight mount, again to help reduce RCS. Oto Melara also provides ammunition for this weapon.
We would remove the T-45s torpedoe defence system (I believe that it is of American origin) and if possible replace it with the Type 23s antisubmarine warfare suite, including the new Type 2087 sonar, we would use the Eurotorp MU90 as the anti-submarine weapon.
For the ships aviation capability we would use the Augusta/westland Merlin, fitted to fire the Marte Mk2/s anti ship missile.

Does anybody have any other ideas? know of superior systems to the ones me and my friend have chosen? general thoughts?

Musashi,
it torpedo decoy system is SSTD aka SLQ-25A.
I had heard about that. But originally I thought there had been a row saying that although the sensors were being built in there weren’t going to be any decoys to begin with.
If the full suite will be included, that’ll obviously help. Can anyone confirm that the Daring-class WILL have a fully operational anti-torpedo system and that it just isn’t on a wish-list?

increase the size of ship to 15,000 tons to make a truly scary modern day “moskva” type stick.
* 2 x 155mm in stealth turrets firing projectiles upto 100km away
* 4 x twin30 mm gun ciws for missiles and FAC shredding :d
* RAM – say 40
* aster15/30 – 120
* naval scalp – minimum 20, max 140 (no SAMs) :diablo:
* the best torpedo defence kit EU can produce, towed array
* 3 x UUV for ambushing submarines , spying and mine locating (armed with
light torps)
* a new heavy torpedo (wake homer + deep diver = 900m depth) from
marconi – keep 10 in the bag
* 4 x Merlin with the RN platinum club kit :diablo:
* CODAG unit with top speed 35 knots to leave chasing SSNs panting
* son-of-SAMPSON radar to track targets out to 700 km.
* a black paint scheme from bow to stern
* room for extra crew (no lean manning BS here). need the boys around for
damage control and swabbin the large decks 😀
price tag would be around $2.5 bil each, but u get what u pay for. dominance isnt cheap.

What torpedo defence system? This is the Labour Party we’re talking about. They stripped all “non-essential” equipment from it. First they planned to introduce it gradually. And now they’ve scrapped that. So now our new escorts will be going into hostile territory without protection against submarines. Or have I missed an amazing change in policy?

We didnt discuss the propulsion, but apparently the T-45 uses the WR-21 gas turbine, its got some sort of special feature to increase efficiency but I forgwt what it is?
By: SteveO - 30th May 2005 at 20:10
But the T-45 has been selected and is under construction thus it just slipped within the requirement os the discussion, the Meko and the Trimaran desighns look good but as yet are only concepts.
Sorry, I didn’t read it properly.

What is propulsion system? COGAG, COGAD,or straight Diesel?

Well, I would go for something bigger.
The Brits have those trimaran-designs. A technolgy-demonstrator was build and the concept validated with it. So instead of the not yet existing type 45 hulls I would choose the not yet existing 8700to trimaran hulls.
The faster speed, better economics and larger deckspace make them my choice.
Propulsion: CODAG, with RR WR-21 turbines and encapsulated MTU diesels + transmission
Main Artillery: 2x 127mm OtoMelara.
Secondary artillery: Oerlikon Millenium 35mm weapon.
Airdefense: PAAMS + Sylverlauncher + Aster 15/30.
Radar: APAR + AMS S1850M volume-search-radar.
Sonar: STN Atlas DSQS-24C.
Optronics: Thales Matador
Torpedoes: Eurotorp MU-90.
Communication: Rohde&Schwarz + Astrium SCOT 3 satcom.
ASM:Kongsberg NSM or Saab RBS-15 mk3
SSM: Scalp Navale
Contermeasures: Thales RESM + BAe Systems DLH
Superstructure build after German Meko principles, 2 large hangars amidship, providing space for 4 medium helicopters (MH-90/EH-101/Tiger/whatever this size). On the stern a flexdeck with missionmodules. (RoRo, additional hangar, landingboat, additional compartments,…)

And RAM instead or in addition to a gun gunbased CIWS.
By: SteveO - 30th May 2005 at 18:49
I don’t like the layout of the T45, it has all its weapons located at the front of the ship and the CIWS can only cover one side of the ship each.
I much prefer the double ended design of this MEKO® X concept, and would have 155mm guns and VLS missiles only.

The 7 provincien class? Might have to replace some bits and pieces from outside Europe but other than that a great vessel with good looks too!
