In the February issue of AFM, you could already see a clarification why a EK could not function well : lack of modern fighters, carriers etc. What do our EU-nations have to offer : some old FC 1’s? Eurofighter, Rafale, Gripen and Mirage 2000-5/9 are all nice a/c, but they won’t take care of the job alone. Most of them are defence fighters, but not one of them in the same class as the F15E, or the F111. So, there must be a new fighter-attacker that one of the nations has to buy. The only aircrafts capable of carrying laser-guided weapons, JDAM/JSOW and tv-guided missiles are the Jaguars and the Tornado’s. There are not enough of them so a third choice will have to be considered. What about buying the Su 30 MKI? French-Israeli technology in a Russian design. Cheaper than the F15E and above all, it would be a good chance to make better relations with Russia. They could take care of the offensive work together with the Tornado’s and the other 4th gen. European designs could function as defence fighters or on carriers. For the heavy-bombing : lease some 20 B52H’s from the USAF capable of carrying ALCM’s, conventional bombs and nuclear weapons and in the anti-shipping role. Maybe this will cost tax-payer some money : but we can not always rely on US support. Next to a military corps, we would also need an intelligence agency.
