EUROPE AND WW2

On the BBC news to-night (22/6/07) I see the Polish PM at an EEC conference stated that their population would be much bigger if Germany har not inveded them in 1939 and killed so many of them. The newsreader stated that WW2 should NOT be mentioned especially to the Germans. Does this mean that all I was taught in history lessons at school did NOT happen and approx 20 million people did Not die as a result of WW2 or are the Germans trying to cover up history for their advantage. ???? 😮

Gavrilo Princip was a Bosnian Serb. And the murder was only the excuse Austria needed, that countrys redicilous ultimatum towards Serbia was what really kicked off WW1.

I was almost right, my apollogies Arthur, but almost right doesnt count and thank you for the correction much appreciated. Oh thanks for giving me the guys name. Bex

Arthur,

Moggy is spot on, the Irish havent stopped moaning about the Brits and theyve been at it for over a hundred years. When u have a minute, just do a quick Google search on the “Northern Ireland Troubles”. And when they werent moaning they were blowing us up. Bex

Sure there’s Northen Ireland (duh), and i’m sure there will be plenty of whining and grudge from Ireland with Britain. And just like there is plenty of grudge from Poland towards Germany, i think that for a large part that grudge (as a ‘gut feeling’) has plenty of justification.

But whining like that in a diplomatic environment? No way; unless anyone can show me some recent demands from the Irish government for potato-reparations from Britain.

And besides, if Austria hadn’t started WW1 there wouldn’t even be a Poland. Historics fit lots of agendas.

… shouldn’t the Irish start complaining about the Brits?

What do you mean ‘start’ ?

They’ve haven’t stopped since 1916 – or earlier.

“Dont mention the war to the Germans (or anyone else)” has been widely adopted by euro-polititions to avoid dragging over old arguments and assist in moving Europe forward on EU matters

Exactly. Whining about the war in a EU-context, like the Kaczynski brothers in Poland recently did, is a very big no-no since it makes for a very, very slippery slope. Especially if you remember that the origins of the EU are in a European Communion for Coal and Steel, designed specifically to put an end to the 30-year-interval-wars between France and Germany and whomever they tried to drag along. And if the Poles are there to b!tch about the Germans, why shouldn’t the Irish start complaining about the Brits? The Dutch about the Spaniards? The Hungarians about the Austrians? The Norwegians about the Swedes?

The reason behind “Don’t mention the war” is, quite simply, “Get on with it.”

No – its because a proposed new EU voting formula is to be based on population size and Germany currently has one of the larger populations and Poland one of the smaller. So its a really a bit of political wrangling by Poland as much as anything.

Isn’t this just the other side of the laws that make displaying Nazi symbols and denying the holocaust illegal?

In other words, once you start banning offensive things (thus limiting freedom of speech and expression…no matter how well meaning or noble the cause), it’s just a small step to effectively re-writing history…whether it be for “evil” purposes or in the name of political correctness.

Pah, another example of the deliberate forgetting of facist crimes. In here and other parts of eastern europe, its almoust criminal to mention Hitler’s slaughters if not in same sentence someone mentions that Stalin killed lot more thougth:mad: 😡 😡
I think its disgusting…along with that ridicilious atempt to make communist and socialism as offically “banned” as are NAZIs….the sings arent good for the future of EU. If one wants to draw wilder speculations, one migth wonder, wheter EU leaders are silently understood the political power of facist ideas in the growing struggle against illegal and legal immigration from Africa and muslim nations.

then again, last nigth was the midsommer nigth, and pretty late one, so it migth be my hangover paranoi if nothing more:D

Hmm interesting point & question. A United States of Europe is not my idea of fun, certainly true that the “Pen is mightier than the sword”. Also Spit u seem to have forgotten one minor little detail, the people of Britian are not allowed to be contraversal, not allowed to have their own oppinions and be patriotic. However, if the Polish PM wants to spout off then hes more than welcome to crawl back to that pillock Putin and draw the old Iron Curtain behind him but as a politician he should have been a wee bit more tactful.
