Europe's Worst Airport?

In your opinion what is the worst airport in Europe and why?
I pick Paris CDG, I was there in June and I hate the place. The only eating places I could find were in the basement (this was in terminal 2), usually restaurants have been on the first floor in other airports I’ve used. Photography was almost impossible, there were not many shops and my flight home was delayed due to the aircraft being held up at its previous airport. I spent ages waiting in a waiting area like a bunker – very grim. My favourite airports are Heathrow for its excellent variety of aircraft and airlines and Brussels for its excellent variety of bars, restaurants, shops.[http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/sabenabelgianairlines]

RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?

Im sorry to hear that Sloyne, but as others have said, racism isnt just confined to England. Some areas are worse than others, where I live there is no racism at all! (from what i know of), but if you go to the more working class areas (Manchester isnt completely working class, but a lot of it is), then you are bound to find that there is more racism. Also, more drugs, alcohol abusage… its normal to find all this in areas that arent as well classed.

RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?

That is just so depressing !! Im sure the promoters for the Commonwealth Games would have been upset to here such comments, i hope so anyway.

As a white person the only time ive experienced any feeling of racism was while speaking to a lady black bus driver in a New orleans suburb, it kinda took me by surprise.

RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?

I do believe that racism is one of the biggest challenges of the 21th century.
People are travelling a lot now and migrations are higher than ever.
The last events here in France during the President election should drive us to think about it. The right wing in many countries is doing very well. Many neo-nazy organisation are connected together and very active. This is a political problem.

Racism is a matter of education . I remember when my daughter was 5 at school , her best friend (Tom) was from Senegal. When she was asked what was different between Tom and the other children , she answered : he is nice. She never mentionned that Tom was black or whatever. Racism is not part of little kids values. Those values are brought by the parents. I have tried to educate my kids with this very basic rule : There no white , black, red or whatever peoples , there is only good or bad peoples.

I do realize that rascism is not confined to Britain, however, I do find that it (rascism) is more overt in Britain than in any other European country I have visited and I found Manchester to be the most rascist UK city that I have visited. Belfast and Glasgow are not too far behind.

Here is a anacdote told to me last week by a colleague who was in Manchester during the recent Commonwealth Games. While watching the boxing TV broadcast, between a African and Caribbean boxer who were both black, in a Manchester pub he overheard the following conversation between two patrons; “Who are you taking in this one?” “I think the nigger’ll win’it” followed by hoots of laughter from the whole pub. Some hosts eh?

Sloyne ,

Unfortunately this is not a typicaly British problem. Racism is a cancer and human stupidity as infinite as the universe!!!

You may not be rascist but a lot of your fellow countrymen are. My wife who is of mixed race (Chinese/English) but who was born in England of a English mother and a Anglo Chinese father. Her father being fourth generation English and served with distinction in the British armed forces in Korea, Egypt and Malaya.

On a visit to the city of Manchester last year my wife was called a “Chink”, “Jap”, “Nip”, “Tiddly Wink”, “Slant”, “Slope” and sundry other rascist terms, all accompanied with “Anglo Saxon” swear words. And all this occured while walking back to our Manchester hotel after attending a concert at the Bridgewater Hall. Our hotel room and car were broken into and the car vandalized. Two youths in a group of about fifteen exposed themselves to us and a group of Australian tourists. In Manchester we were constantly running a obsticle course of dog feces. Three days in Manchester was enough for us, We transfered to a Liverpool hotel for the duration of our stay. We found that city to be less rascist and safer than it’s near neighbour, but almost as dirty.

I chose to stay out of this one. I always respect what Mongu has to say, as he frequently makes valid, logical arguments. However, Sloyne made some valid points, as well. Phil-cov-uni on the other hand, let’s just say, thank god he’s only made that lone post.

RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?

Just for the record:

My dislike of LPL is not only because of the Lennon link.

I genuinely believe that Peel Airports have made a bad job of the new terminal. Granted, it is a huge improvement. But once it gets really, really crowded I think the cracks will become apparent. Lets just wait and see in 5 years time!

RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?

I have nothing against either Mongu or his enemy (cant be bothered to go back and look at his name, sorry :-)!!). I wouldnt say Liverpool airport is bad because its name has John Lennon in it. However, before I say this may I let you know that I like most Americans and Canadians (since our so called European friends are a bunch of *****) but the IRA were funded by Americans and Canadians.
Many of your very wealthy businessmen gave large sums of money out.

Now, after Sept 11th you guys are starting to realise how bad terrorism actually is (since this is probably the worst you’ve had for a long long time) and we over here in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and N.Ireland (I say that instead of the UK because I am against us all joining up, im English, not British or European, just English) are all used to terrorism. We have constantly had terrorism, you havent.

So now that we have found out that John Lennon who was for “peace” had been giving the IRA large sums of money shows that he obviously wasnt for peace in England or N.Ireland. Therefore it is ridiculous to name a nice airport or dirty rotten airport (never been there, I can say) after John Lennon. For you Americans, it is like calling the “Empire State” building “Bin Laden building”.
Let me stress again I am not racist but am a Nationalist and I would urge you guys not to argue about this subject anymore before people like me and other Nationalists of their countries do turn racist.

I think you lost that one Mister Mongu! Next time check your facts. Incidentally Liverpool has for several years enjoyed a below national average crime rate unlike Manchester! Have a biscuit!

Happy researching

RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?

I agree about CDG being bad. Facilities and security are poor. On a different note, I also thought that LAX security was almost non-existent, or it was when I was last there. A child had his Action Man’s gun (no bigger than a 50p) taken away. Barmy or what?

RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?

Very interesting discussion. One reason I like LHR is probably because I’ve usually been blessed by good weather when I’ve been and I’ve got good footage (both photo and video) from the top of the Queen’s Building, though I’m not too keen on terminal 4. Last time I was there I ate in a “food village” in terminal 2 and had some really nice chicken with a good salad. I couldn’t take to CDG, but I was interested by Saab 2000’s post about terminal 1 at CDG being bad, I thought perhaps it was just terminal 2. I cannot comment on LPL as I’ve never been. I think when a passenger usually has to spend several hours in an airport the facilities should be good and I am all in favour of viewing areas, I cannot think they constitute a real danger to security.

RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?

Fair point, it does look as if I have a grudge. I don’t think I do, it’s just the way it seems. Maybe I’m hyper critical. I could criticise any other airport you name, as long a I have been to it.

I don’t understand your point about NI to be honest – you are saying that the “majority” means the population of the whole of the island of Ireland? I can’t agree with that. Look at similar positions – India/Pakistan, US/Canada, even Alaska/Canada. You seem to be saying that if part of a landmass is a separate country from the majority (population wise) then the right to decide the future lies with the bigger part? What is the difference between ROI/NI and US/Canada? Should the US be able to engulf Canada because it was only partitioned by old colonials? I’m sure the native Americans didn’t distinguish the two countres from each other.

Similarly on tax, your argument is a bit naive. Who creates jobs for 90% of the population? The top 10% might be a good answer. Who defines “fair”? Don’t you think that people who earn more, also spend more? Does that not mean in turn, that they pay more indirect tax like VAT or GST? Even someone “dodging” high tax rates will still usually end up paying more than Joe Normal. The notion of someone paying “no tax” is just a myth (if you exclude babies!)

RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?

>I thought Al’Qaeda were freedom fighters?
>
>Your comment about NI is also a bit wide of the mark. We are
>a democracy; if the majority want to be part of the UK, so
>be it. The minority have no claim to use terror.

Which majority? That of the island of Ireland or of the occupied and gerrymandered six counties of the Irish province of Ulster?

>Anyway, you misinterpret my point about crime at airports.
>There is crime at all airports but in the car park, LPL used
>to be worse than the average. Just one of those things,
>agree with me or not.

Well if crime exists at all airports, why single out Liverpool?

>Oh, and it is Port St. Mary, not St Marys Port. Nice place,
>maybe a little bit scruffy round the edges.

Oops! sorry, thanks for the correction, but did I get the others right?

>Next point – when I referred to a website to confirm my JL
>allegation, I obviously intended you to consider “proper”
>and trustworthy sites. Do you believe such things exist?

Yes i’m sure they do, just as sure as I am that if such allegations could have been proven then “i’m sure” the Margaret Thatcher government would have publicised it. As for traitors and such; Was Kim Philby a traitor or a colonel in the KGB? How about Oleg Penkofsky, was he a Russian traitor or democratic loving defector?

>And finally – what do you have against people trying to pay
>less tax exactly? If you could, would you pay over the odds
>for the principle of it???????

I have nothing against people paying their fair share of taxes and no, I wouldn’t pay over the odds but I do pay my fair share. I do think that there should be a minimum tax for every one regardless of income, this would have the double barrel effect of forcing everyone to pay their fair share and eliminate tax lawyers/advisers. Now it’s my turn to ask a question; Why is it that the richest members of a society seek to pay less than their fair share of the tax burden? No, no need to answer that, I already know the answer.

Anyway, getting back to Liverpool, you do seem to hold a grudge against this airport. Might I enquire as to why?

Phil-cov-uni, how can you go from John Lennon being a traitor to George Bush starting WWIII? That came out of nowhere, to say the least. Can we make logical transistions, please? This thread suddenly became political, and last time I checked, this is not a political forum.

RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?

Definitely, Madrid-Barajas is the worst airport in Europe, not because of the shopping which is great but for design (I would say lack of design): The airport is fairly modern and well equiped, but it has been built adding things, linealy and without any structure. Three terminals, several piers makes conecting from terminal one to three a long walking distance of five kilometres. Narrow gangways, dark spaces, confusing departing gates and massification. Small tarmac makes most planes stay away from fingers. You could easily staying for more than 30 minutes from the plane stand to the runway. A complete nighmare. So nighmare that my mother which is fit but getting old, had heart disorders in her last conection. I find LPL really cute and confortable.
