Evening Shots From The Pub (12/8/07)

The Birthday Girl (my wife) and I agreed that a couple of hours taking landing shots from the APH on a nice sunny evening would be an ideal antidote for the horrors of a family birthday celebration.

Well, it was sunny when we left the house…… 😎

By this time, a great big nasty black cloud was slowly moving overhead like the mothership in “Independence Day”…

It was nice to catch up with Mr Balmer, if only briefly. 🙂

Enjoy…. 😀

wow, I don’t understand all those words 😉 Luminance channel and RGB conversion? Am I missing a trick here?

 your doing better than me ,All i understood was that they are pics of landing aircraft:o

….Luminance channel and RGB conversion? Am I missing a trick here?

Changing the picture mode to Lab Colour then applying the unsharp mask to just the luminance channel sharpens the image but leaves the color channels unaffected, preventing “halos” caused by over-sharpening.

You can afford to be more generous with USM if you only apply it to the luminance channel, but you still need to watch out for “jaggies”.

This should provide an explanation.:)

After applying USM in this way, you’d need to change the picture mode back to RGB before saving as a JPEG.

Nice work, Lance. The bmi Baby 73 looks rather fine in the Sun!

I need another APH visit soon!

…Which lens Lance? Tried the sharpening yet?

These were all taken with the Canon 70-200 f/4L, Ian.

My “traditional” workflow included 3 to 5 repetitions of 100/0.2/0 on the luminance channel in Lab Colour mode, followed by conversation to RGB mode for a single application of USM at 6-15/60/0 to add “pop” to the image.

For the above shots I followed your suggest of a single application at approx 500/0.2/0 (varied as necessary to avoid jaggies), but applied it to the luminance channel in Lab Colour mode. I kept my usual practice of converting back to RGB and adding a final “rinse” of USM at 6-15/60/0.

The outcome was some reasonable shots in lousy conditions, so I’ll probably stick to this general workflow now. Thanks for the help. 🙂

Thanks for the comments, chaps. 😎

Great shots Lance like the Flybe EMB-145 and the XL 757.
