The point is – do you ever feel nervous when getting into a car? The number of fatal and otherwise accidents on the road far exceed aviation accidents. And they can hurt, as I once found out!

Personal fears can effect anyone. On a flight from Brisbane to Sydney (ANSETT DC-9) a big hairy truck driver, who was ‘repositioning’, was sat next to me and he was absolutely terrified.

I tried to calm him by telling him how safe flying was, but the pilot bounced the plane badly at Sydney and the truck driver shot off the plane, almost before the doors were open!

Whenever I board an airliner, I’m more interested in the shapely hostesses…

ah yes, the drink trolley being empty… :p

Thanks for that, Matt. Now you’ve made me aware of that possibility I’m never going to look at flying in the same way again! 😀

Stupid as it sounds, but I hate flying in airliners. Only flown in an airliner for the first time in February, and only flown in total four times (two of those times were last weekend), but I really don’t like it. Stick me in a 63 year old aircraft made of poles and canvas and i’m fine, but I can’t stand being in a big metal tube, mainly because I can’t see where i’m going, and usually can barely see out of the window either

I was never nervous about flying previously or in other types of aircraft since, well, except when things got a bit bumpy flying in an open cockpit biplane over Belgium!

Now you’re just showing off! 😀

I was thinking exactly the same, not that I’m jealous or anything… 😀

To answer the question, nope, I never get nervous flying although I’m sure something will happen that will make me a little nervous at some point!

The only time I ever started thinking about it was when I flew in a B-1B….

Now you’re just showing off! 😀

The only time I ever started thinking about it was when I flew in a B-1B.
Not that the aircraft is unsafe…or even that I minded flying at 500 feet at Mach .8… To see the ground go past at that speed is something.
Great fun…and much smoother than a similar ride in a B-52G 20 years before.

It’s just that after a day of ejection seat procedure training, getting fitted for a chute and all the other tasks that go along with flying in an ejection seat aircraft…your mind does tend to run along safety items.

I always think positive thoughts, the main one being that if the aircraft crashes, it’ll probably be a quick death.:diablo:

Best flight was from Cyprus to London, “Clear air all the way,” said the captain.

So we hit a massive storm at 5000 ft and the only cure was another G&T, served by a very cheerful and charming trolley dolly.
Everyone else on board, apart from myself, Mrs Joglo and the crew, were ashen white or a strange shade of green.

Apparently, these unpredictable storms are a feature in that area and many aircraft have sustained visible damage.

only been nervous a couple of times…during dramatic happenings though.

Only real time i was nervous was on a Alliance Air B732 flight from Bhopal to Delhi. I still think the pilot mistakenly took the 732 instead of his Mig 29.

other than not much…. if events do happen, like recently the bird hit seconds before take off and the sudden breaking with a few ft of runway to spare, i was not nervous but had a jump in my adrenalin. Thats how i usually react.

maybe something is wrong with me. 😀

Ever NOT get nervous flying?

Like everyone else here, I (obviously) like aviation a lot – but I don’t enjoy flying. I do get a tad nervous during sustained turbulence.

I also fear the obese passenger – the ones that spill into your seat.

Commercial airliners – only when I see the fat guy with BO headed down the aisle and I have a seat vacant next to me

Flying my aircraft
– never

Flying in other light aircraft
– yes. Some GA pilots make me nervous.

I don’t know if this will help you, but I was a terribly nervous flyer and that was after many years of lots of flying on business. One day I read in a paper that the likelihood of being involved in an aircraft incident was so vanishingly small it was next to an impossible.

I have taken that on board, and I have convinced myself that it is impossible that I can be involved in a problem. That absolutely sustained me during an uncomfortable approach during a lightning storm!

You may think that is illogical – but is it logical to think you’re going to end up in a flaming pile every time you go to Spain?

Incidentally in many hours of flying the only (very minor) thing I have ever experienced out of the ordinary was a go – around at Chicago when the aircraft in front hadn’t cleared the runway in time.

I always get that tingle in my stomach when I walk onto the plane, from the fact that from that point on, something could happen. However, I soon think realistically and realise that if anything were to happen, it would be totally out of my control and it would happen anyway. That soon puts my mind at rest and allows me to enjoy the flight – turbulence and all.

I think he means Taipei. I am sure it was this chap that was flying with EVA Air, which flies to Taipei via Bangkok.

I am not normally a nervous traveller and nothing terribly horrifying has ever happened to me whilst I have been in the air so far, however, I do have the occasional thought about ‘what if something does go wrong’ just before I board a plane, but then I tend to relax once I have seen the crew and watched the safety video.

Always….all the time…..constantly. I can cope with it, but take off and landing in bad weather is a torture. In an alarming way, now after the Spanair crash.

Love aviation, love planes………but I start to enjoy flying after I land. 🙂

As much as I love flying, I still get the jitters before I get onboard.
