Is it me or does the practice in nice weather just not have the impact that the ‘real’ thing had, with that stream take-off in the gloom and re-heats glowing bright and vortices streaming of the wings etc.
Just made my mind up to devote a day over the xmas break transferring some of my old Lightning video to digi and posting up……including that damp gloomy day in August 87 at Binners.

F6’s from from riyadh, Saudi to Uk was 8 hours flying time, and 6 overhead refuels as well as a few touch downs, so SA to UK…. probably 12 hours flying time 10-12 refuels on an f6. A T5? even more. Thunder city were originally going to do it from Cranfield uk to the Cape, using 2 S2 Buccs as buddies, and 10-12 lay over stops. They did it with their first Hunter in 10 stops.

Can anyone say how many refuelling stops a Lightning would have to make flying from Cape Town to UK, just as a matter of interest
Lots.
I seem to recall that Dave Roome wrote that it took 7 prods from Victors just on the Gan to Akrotiri leg alone when 74 brought it’s F.6’s back from Singapore in 1971…..and they had the overburgers fitted…….

Nice airshow display too
Quite the static lineup also. Sad to see the Lightning decoys on the video. I was there in 1986 and you could see them all lined up then.

I was there!!.
It says a lot about the Lightning when you think from first flight to in service was only five years and they were still able to put up a nine ship formation in the very last months of operational service.
The Typhoon on the other hand has taken some twenty years to get into service and they struggle to put up a nine ship, no it aint what it used to be:( .

John.
