As some of you know, as well as been a commercial aviation nut, I’m also a weather enthusiast/amatuer forecaster and help to run the biggest weather forum in the U.K.
For several days now, I’ve been keeping an eye on developing weather for next week. Usually, when severe weather is forecast so far in advance, the actual events either don’t materialise or are somewhat downgraded. At the moment, without getting technical, next week’s charts are being remarkably consistant and so I think it’s fairly safe to say this.
We could see severe cold and significant snow for long periods next week. Even the south could see some very serious snowy conditions. Some people are suggesting we could be seeing the worst snow and cold conditions this country has seen for over 20 years. Airports will likely suffer; some may close during the most severe spells; some flights may be cancelled or at least experience delays.
Expect to see weather warnings, or hints of these conditions, on TV forecasts over the coming days. The real warnings will start around the weekend.
If these charts materialise into reality, and we’re now certain that we’ll at least see something very cold next week, the U.K. transport infrastucture could well be put to the test.

Isn’t it because some or most of the teachers can’t get into school? without all the teachers – you can’t teach the pupils (most of whom are also not able to get into school).

yay in the paper it says every where in uk except cornwall is 100% likly to have snow while cornwall and devon is 60% likley

Believe it is something to do with Health and Safety…
Public buildings, in Britain, apparently have to heated to a minimum of 18c (I think – can remember getting turfed out of an exam in a sports hall because the heating system had broken down) – then we all had to walk home because the bus service was snowed under… – Nermal

Great news, my snowboard is up here with me at uniy, and loads of big hills round here, mainly cannock chase and the peak district, need it after only managing to get 2 hours of snowboarding in Italy before my accident. COME ON PLEASE SNOW !!!

WD, we are supposedly getting are weather from the Arctic next week! Last year we thought we had it bad when Scandinavian weather came this way, I dread to think what this is gonna be like. Fun!

I woke up yesterday to -18C with a forcasted high of -15C. Windchill was being reported as low as -37C. I was hoping to take some pictures at work of the cold weather ops but it was just too darn cold outside. Today is a heat wave with temperture around -12C for the high. If this is the weather coming your way, bundle up cause it’s brutal out there. I don’t even want to imagine what it’s like in the Great White North (Canada). Brrrrr…

The papers are exagerrating EAL. Best thing to do is watch the BBC TV forecasts; they’re the best. Wouldn’t be surprised if we hit -10 or worse though by night, and with a strong wind it will feel colder than it actually is.

A quick update for you all.
As expected the media are now picking up on this so regular updates should be available for airports and flights etc..
This is still looking like a very serious event next week with plenty of snow and sub-zero temperatures. Eastern and Scottish airports are at the highest risk but all areas are likely to catch some snow at somepoint. Whilst many of us (me included) are looking forward to next week; the situation is so severe we shouldn’t forget it will also be a very dangerous week.

some of us down in this corner of the country haven’t seen a single snow fall for this entire winter period. provided the snow and cold weather doesn’t destroy our transport infrastructure like it did last time (because the gritters didn’t get moving in time) we (or atleast I) will be pleased to see some snow. can’t wait.

I have to go about 5 miles to school by bus. In the South East we are really un-prepared for snow, and so as soon as it starts setting that’s it. The airport closes, trains and buses cancelled and the orads are blocked by cars of stupid people that have tried getting to work and have got stuck. Last year it hit us really bad on the 31st Jan, and that was it, 2 days off school for me 😀

If the snow is bad at my school then they close the school as I imagine some teachers and pupils in walking distance cant get to school.
