Can anyone tell me if I dreamt it or did UK a/c manufacturers each have experimental registrations they could apply to their new designs for testing purposes. Don’t know whether this was for all a/c or only those destined for the military ? If so what were they? Thanks

The class B marking were introduced in 1929and lasted until 1948
A Armstrong Whitworth
B Blackburn
B Pourtsmouth Aviation( 1947)
C Boulton Paul
E de Havilland
F Fairey
G Gloster
H Handley Page
I Hawker
J Parnell
J Reid & Sigrist (1947)
K Avro
L Saunders Roe
N Supermarine
O Vickers
P Westland
R Bristol
S Spartan aircraft until 1930 Heston Aircraft 1936-
U Miles Aircraft
V Airspeed
W G & J Weir
X Percival
Y Cuffle Owen
Z Auster
As far as the photos I have seen they were very much for prototypes only rather than the more modern class B use for production aircraft. They mostly just used one number at the end.

No problem – but there were others from pre-war until 1948 which, to me, appeared more random.
If anyone else knows of a good site dealing with them (coz I wouldn’t know what to search for them as!) then feel free to post it.

You are thinking of B-Class – sort of like the motor industries trade plates.
Here is a link to a list of the registration prefixes since 1948.
Hope this helps.
Oh, and welcome!!!
