F-100 vs F8U

My question. Why was the F8U around 200mph faster than the F-100? They weighed nearly the same and both had the J-57 engine, yet the F8U was a lot faster.

I also understand that the AF considered buying the F8U for themselves, but the rivalary with the Navy jinxed the whole deal. Too bad and the F8U was a superior plane.
