The F-104 was the fastest fighter in the world when it first flew. It achieved this by having a very low drag design using a very small wing. Was this a good idea? While it had searing performance, it was poor at turning. I know of no other fighter since its day, except the British Lightning, where the design so greatly sacrificed manuverability for speed.
