F-104 vs F-4

What did the F-4 have that was better than the F-104? They basically had the same engine, the J-79. One had short stubby wings that made it glide like a brick, while the other had 2 engines, bent wings and a tail that looked like it was falling off, and flew like a brick. Was it avionics, payload? Why was one a total success and still flying today and the other a marginal success?
