Can anyone tell me all the relatively new ground attack capabilities the Tomcat (Bombcat) has acquired. I know it can now carry some type of targeting pod, not sure which type though. I know it can be fitted with all American LGB’s, including GBU-10/24, GBU-16, and GBU-12/22. What about dumb bombs? What types and how many can it carry. Where does the F-14 carry these bombs (LGB and/or dumb)? Is it just in between the intakes, on the wings, where? Also, I have some other questions regarding the F-14’s performance. Why does the newer F-14D have a top speed of 1,240 mph while the F-14A has a top speed of 1,540 mph. I mean the engines in the D model are a lot more powerful at 27,000 lb. st each in afterburner whereas the TF30’s in the A produce 20,900 lb. in full burner. What gives? Also, what is the maximum climb rate of this aircraft. Just about every source I have come across says 30,000 feet per minute? The F-4E max climb rate of 48,000 feet per minute with the F-4F a little higher than that, and earlier model Phantoms having a climb rate of anywhere from 40,000 feet per minute to 45,000 feet per minute. Can the Phantom outclimb the Tomcat or is the 30,000 foot figure off? Anyone who can answer my different questions, I will be grateful to. I won’t be disagreeable as in the past, I just need to know the facts.
