I found the Meteor on google earth at long last:D 😀 😀

however the same area on flash earth reveals a big mass of disturbed ground with no sign of the meteor.

Rad,

unusually, I don’t appear to have marked it on my range map. There are marker boards visible in my photo but looking on Live Local at these areas fails to bring up anything. Of course, they may not be the same as the markers on the map!
ISTR it’s in the area centered on 910390 within 2km in every direction, that’s where I spent the most time.

Good luck!

Why not have a look fot the Meteor on Goggle Earth, at least this might give you an idea if its still recognisable and its possible location, bearing in mind the quality of the photos of that area and when they were taken.
My own local airfield is covered in cloud in Goggle earth so we need an update!;)

I keep looking, but the Senneybridge area is yet to be updated on my version (its the freebie-cheapskate I know:D ) but I shall keep trying.

There is no mystery about it. The book shows a picture of the aircraft with her serial. It also shows the remains of a Canberra. How it came to Sennybridge I should imagine is by lorry from St Athan. It’s use is as a range target – her history isn’t on the hills of Wales – it lies in her use before that.

So in answer – it’s not compulsory to buy the book – how it came to be on the range is simple – it was moved there – why – because the Army perceived a need for it.

According to the book, it is VZ568. It’s not a bad book but many of the captions are wrong.

Jim, thanks!

Possible ID I have is VZ568 coded ‘C’ with 63 Sqn until 1955 when it became 7261M with 4STT at St Athan, again not a million miles from Sennybridge.

Anyone got a copy of the book and put us out of our misery ?

Yes – I don’t think it’s that one! The identity is in the book at the start of the thread.

The black and yellow checks belong to No 63 Squadron at RAF Waterbeach and the aircraft code is “C”. I narrow this down to WK942 which ended up as a U.16 drone at RAE Llanbedr and was scrapped in 1962 . Llanbedr is fairly close to Sennybridge. Can anybody back this identification up ?

Radpoe – My course of action would be to contact the Commanding Officer at Sennybridge ATE (they have a website) and speak directly with him.
It’s MOD property – therefore they will be unlikely to want to release it unless it’s going to a bona fidi museum .

This is how she looked in May 1987. I havn’t been to that part of the range since. In fact, the last time I was on Sennybridge was 1991 I think.

Ok that’s just what I was looking for!!!!!!, now I know someone else is interested but how do I go about trying to aquire this old girl?

I have looked at the ATE website only to find there are 3 sites under the same umberella of Sennybridge ATE so, a) which site is the Meteor on, b) does anyone have the co-ordinates where the aircraft is?

Anyhow thanks to everyone for the info so far.

regards Rad.
