RF-84F in storage depot at Nationale Luchtvaartmuseum in Soesterburg, NL (since closed) in 2011. I’m not sure whether this aircraft has found it into the new Nationale Militairemuseum, which is due to be opened by King Willem Alexander on December 11th.

Republic F-84F Thunderstreak (51-1786) at the Virginia Air and Space Center, Hampton Virginia. I took this photo last week, one one I saw on this visit to the US.

Is this perhaps the same aircraft? These photos were taken at Hampton Airpower Park in 1978.

Yes, they did – through the same method that saw 36 Mystere IVAs “transferred” from the French Air Force and operational “with Israeli pilots and ground crew (most of whom spoke primarily French)” in just a couple of weeks (the IAF already had one squadron of Mystere IVAs, and had ordered more – but did not have the pilots and ground support ready for the additional aircraft, so French Air Force manned and flew the 2 new squadrons while wearing IAF uniforms).

While the Mysteres could be (and were) permanently transferred to the IAF, the F-84Fs were subject to US transfer restrictions, and had to return to the French Air Force after the Suez Crisis/Sinai Campaign was over.

I believe the last F-84’s in service anywhere were the Hellenic Air Force’s RF-84F’s and that 1991 was when they were finally retired.

Didnt these birds survive into the ’90s in Greece?

The RF is a nice looking bird…thanks for those photos!

I’d be interested to know how they employed the machine guns on the RF model? Obviously it wasn’t meant to dogfight, but do you suppose they were for ground strafing targets of opportunity? Perhaps just self defense (as opposed to more offensive fighter-type missions)?

If you “google” F-84F and select the “images” pages, there are several pictures of these aircraft carrying underwing stores.

These include, inboard and outboard tanks, A dummy Mk.7 “bucket of sunshine” and unguided rockets.

You do have to scroll quite a bit to find these though.
