F-86 fuselage in Athens

Hi all,

It may be a bit of a long-shot this one but it’s something that I’ve wondered about for years so I’ll give it a go.

Many years ago, when I were a lad:), I was on holiday with my parents in Greece. We spent a few days in Athens and one day took a taxi ride from there to the port of Pireaus. Part way between the two I was amazed to see the fuselage of an F-86 apparantly dumped on the other side of the road – literally on the pavement it seemed. It was a bit of a white-knuckle taxi ride so I didn’t get long to look at it! I can’t be sure of the exact model but, if I remember correctly, it looked like an F-86D – it had the extended radome nose of that type anyway. I don’t recall what markings, if any, were on it although it was in a bare metal finish, apart from the dust.

This would have been in the early 1980s and I’ve wondered what the story behind that fuselage was and what became of it ever since.

Does anyone know any more about it?
