F4 and MiG 21 in BRITISH AirSpace Hangar

Check out: http://www.airspaceduxford.org.uk/html/gallery.html

Notice the not so British aircraft on the right side of the photograph dated 13th December 2005, not to mention the MiG21…

Blasphemy. Burn ’em. Be it the devil’s work? Or has Duxford run out of space?

Yes – like one wing being new!

The Mossie can however be easily hung from the jacking points, which are inside of the damaged area of wing.

Out of interest what kind of structural surveys have they carried out on the Mosquito which has a damage history previous to entering preservation?

The survey for the TSR2 did reveal that the overall condition of the airframe, wing structure, weight and the fact it was made up of several TSR2 airframes led to the very sensible decision not to hang the airframe.

Can anyone confirm the rumour that they planned to hang the TSR2 until they discovered the wing was only held on with 4 bolts?

Dennis Healey did that already

I haven’t responded to this thread so far because my first response lacked aggressive reasonableness to Phillip’s inability to read the word ‘Commonwealth’ and got deleted prior to posting. Perhaps you’d like to hand back the Canadian made Lancaster and the Canadian operated Lysander before wittering on about British aircraft? Quite a lot of folks turned up to help Britain out, Phillip. You might think the post was ‘amusing’. I didn’t.

Dave, in answer to your more sensible question – the original idea did consider hanging the TSR-2 (this is from the first press call) I understand, but it was ~ah~ dropped (the idea, that is…) because of the weight of the a/c.

Wing bolts have nothing to do with it, but is symptomatic of the Chinese whispers that go around about such decisions. Would someone hang a TSR-2 from its wings? Are we worried about the wings dropping off if hung? Obviously not in both cases. A bit of thought can help with these stories.

That and there wasn’t a yard-arm big enough.

The Phantom was/is with OFMC and was one that Mark Hanna flew in service.

And yes, it’s now part of IWM’s collection.

The phantom, the mig and a few others are been put inside away from jack frost as the museum wont start moving aircraft permantely in doors until august/september time, and even then you can see them at certain times.

They were supposed to have done the temporary move in January but i think they were having problems with the shell of the building or something.

You mean “Phantom FGR.2, faithful RAF steed of the 1980s”, don’t you?

And everyone knows we’re buying surplus MiG-21s from Turkey as the new JCA – it’s a glimpse of the future.

Haha 😀 By the way, wasn’t that Phantom owned by the Fighter Collection, originally planning to make it airworthy? Or have they given it to the IWM now?

I suspect you missed out the word Commonwealth which would explain the CF100….

The Canuck isn’t British either – at least the Phantoms in RAF markings though. Then again, for all we know, maybe they are just being stored there at the minute? Apparently the Blenheim IV/Bolingbroke has been dropped from the plans as well, shame
