F4U Corsair replica's

Hi all,

I’m searching for a very long time for plans or factories that produce Full-Size F4U replica’s. Flyable or not, any info is greatly received.

I know the WAR F4U Corsair replica and the Corsair82, but never seen a Full-size replica. I know there are Full-Size replica’s of the Spitfire, but not of the Corsair.

Anyone knows something?
Thanks.

Found something 🙂

There IS a factory that builds full-size replica’s of P-47’s and F4U’s. It are static models with dummy engine and ready-built for $80,000 😮

Yeah, that’s true. Another problem would be to build a light but strong landing gear. The original would be too heavy.

One problem I could also see with a full-scale Corsair might be the spar. On a scale aircraft it might not be so bad, but on a full-size….?

Point of interest – there IS a full-scale Mustang kit around, the manufacturer of which I can’t recall, but it’s indeed pricey, and I don’t think the turbine(!) engine is included in the cost!!

The Spitfire Aircraft Co has developed Clive DuCros’ replica to take an Allison V-12. Cost (minus engine and other bits) $320,000 or something like that…

Yeah, I know the Spitfire Aircraft Company and I know the Mustang kit, both very nice

Steve’s got most of the main points covered there – the other one is, of course, cost, hence most builders opt for a scaled-down aircraft.

You’ve only got to read about Clive DuCros’ full-scale Spitfire prototype, to get an idea of what he had to go through, especially with the Jaguar engine conversion. The building of the aircraft itself was quite straightforward in comparison!!

You’re right, but a full size replica could be built out of wood or even better, composites, because that’s lighter. The engine could be a Pratt & Whitney R1830 of 1200 HP. The only problem is the fuel consumption of 50 gal/h 😮 .

I know very little about homebuild aircraft, but a full size Corsair is a big bit of kit, which takes a lot of power to move. So I’m guessing any full size replica would also require quite a large engine, and therefore be quite a heavy and comparitively complex thing to build. Which might well explain why most replicas (ie, the WAR series) are 2/3 scale…

Our resident expert in replica building is unfortunately indisposed (in forum terms) right now.

I hope he will be returning directly 🙂
