F94 Starfire and Hawker Hart

Bet you never thought you’d see those two names sitting side by side!
I’ve been browsing through Airliners.net and I’ve found some interesting piccies, the first being a couple of absolutely jaw-dropping full colour air-to-air shots of an F94 taken over the North Pole in 1953.
The other pic is of Hawker Hart K4639,taken sometime in the 1930’s,but with no other info.I’ve emailed the guy who posted it to offer my limited assistance, but thought some of you might have something to say on it,particularly the location.
Happy browsing…

Yes, airfields then were a bit like shopping centres all over Britain today… Just with fewer McDonalds!!! (Sorry, couldn’t help myself. Back to the discussion forum for me, I think – my work here is done!)

I would guess the Hind was taken at an Empire Air Day in tha late 30’s. Looks like it might be Old Sarum to me?? But there were plenty of stations with Belfast Truss hangars at the time?

Cheers Flood, that’s just the stuff I was looking for.I’ve posted the guy a link to this page,so hopefully he’ll be able to thank you in person later. 🙂
Judging by the myriad of types and the fact that there are so many civvys milling about,I’d guess that this picture was taken on an Empire Air Day.Were these events widespread or held at more specific locations?I’m just wondering if it might narrow the location down a bit…

After studying my copy of Air Britain’s The K File I would judge that this is K4639 with 21 Sqn, which it joined 10/1/36 and seems to have left upon issue to 1 ASU on 18/8/38, when the squadron re-equipped with Blenheim 1’s. During this time 21 Sqn was based at Bircham Newton, Abbotsinch, Lympne, and finally Eastchurch.
It ran out of fuel and overturned on force landing at Havant, Hampshire, on 6/7/39 when operating with Northolt Station Flight for the University of London Air Squadron. It was subsequently SOC as being beyond economic repair.
Don’t know where the pic was taken though! Anyone recognise the background?

Corrrr…F-94 in colour…Ooh I’ve got to lie down in a dark room for a while.

The Harts very nice as well…even though it’s not actually a Hart and is in fact a Hind!
