FAA Historic Flight Rumour- Top Secret

A ‘high level mole’ within the flight revealed that they are currently bidding on a Sea Fury T20 in the USA, to be sustantially funded by a private individual.

The source of this info is none other than John Beattie, who was presenting a lecture at White Waltham. Maybe they could get WG655 back again, seeing as it ( or something closely related) is now restored to flight!

Fouga – the Gannet AEW.3 G-BLYP flew on the circuit in the mid eighties – it’a a sad fact that anything that is unusual doesn’t necessarily get bookings.
The former Amjet Gannet T.5 is still stranded between here and the U.S.

Sad to hear 🙁 Home the T.5 gets airborne again soon. It looks great from the pictures I saw. Is it waiting for a new engine? I’d rather see an unusual type like a Gannet then the 10.000th spitfire at an airshow. guess I’m funny that way 🙂

Guys

Not wishing to promote this thread much more, but let’s put some things straight here for the record:

1. Firstly, it’s the ROYAL NAVY Historic Flight, not FAA Historic Flight (good to see people get that one right!).

2. Former RNHF T.20 WG655 is not on its way over to the UK.

3. RNHF are not buying any Sea Fury.

4. The “wishlist” is very nice, but in virtually all cases completely unrealistic.

5. The remains of WB271 were not scrapped at all and are still, for the time being, extant, though they will eventually be destroyed.

I suggest that this thread is brought to a timely halt before any more half-truths based on comments made at a private function are publically banded around? All official public statements on RNHF business are made via the OFFICIAL website.

Speaking of which, please note that the last date for posting orders for good from the online shop is Thursday 21 December. Best get those Xmas cards now while stocks last!

Cheers

Lee

Former Jim Wilkie machine G-AYXT – along with the ex Queen’s Flight Whirlwind HCC.12 which the owner wished to see on display in the U.K.

Firefly WB271 was scrapped. I should imagine the spares holding is still extant.
As a side note – I was involved with getting a Whirlwind HAS.7 back in the air again – there is almost nothing to speak of spares wise and little to no interest from airshow organisers in booking such a machine. We took the right decision to ground her.

Would haved hoped to see a Firefly back with the RNHF. If money is available to purchase another Sea Fury could it not be channeled into a UK restoration project, or indeed an existing airworth example from the USA?
what ever happens if a benifactor is offering to obtain aircraft for the flight that is great news.

Without wishing to invoke bad memories what has happened to the remains of WB271 and the spares holding that RNHF must have had. With enough support may an Firefly is possible. It would be a great memorial to all concerned.

Sea Hawk, for a first post I think its a good one. I agree with your list and the points u made about the Sea Fury, but theres one you missed off your list what about the Fairey Gannet? Now that is an aircraft Id like to see the FAA get airbourne again. Bex

Hi this is my first post, after several months watching from the sidelines.

In many ways I can see the logic behind acquiring a Sea Fury T.20 – spares commonality, knowledge of the type, ability to give VIP joyrides, etc. But I am afraid that it leaves me a bit cold – it is not as if it is a typical FAA ‘plane – only 60 were delivered to the FAA, the type has no front line service experience, only being used for training and I don’t think that they ever served aboard a ship. In addition, and this clearly a personal opinion, and this ignores their somewhat unfortunate looks – being as ugly as the Sea Fury F10/FB11 was sleek.

Clearly there are distinct limits to the RNHF’s resources and the operation of another Sea Fury might ultimately be at the expense of something else.

My wish list of more appropraite aircraft for the RNHF would be:

I belive that any one of the above would be more meaningful and representative than a Sea Fury T.20. I sure there will some views on this!

Regards

Robert

Were any of the Iraqi IDT’s ex Royal Navy by any chance? Or indeed could VZ345 be put back in the air with a replacement fuse?

If it had a replacement fuselage ,would it still be VZ345?

If this is true it’s not very difficult to put the pieces together. I know we don’t like speculation about such things do we 🙂
