Several years ago Robs Lamplough had some of the ex Swedish/Royal Navy AEW1 Skyraiders at Weald.. does anyone know if any have been restored to or have flown since. The reason i ask is that i have never seen a pic of an airworthy ‘raider’ with the distinctive radar bulge in place.!
Also i believe that the FAAM has an original one on display, and also has the ex Helston example in store.. so how many other Royal Navy examples have survived.?

[QUOTE=pagen01;1353950]Just in case no one has picked up on it yet, the ‘nice’ FAAM Skyraider has two serials, and the second link (above) gives an explanation.
I must admit I always thought it wore WT983 while in FAA service and that it was wrongly preserved as WT121. However the link states it was allocated serial WT983 but Douglas wrongly applied the serial WT121!
Interesting stuff. I have heard a similar story with one of the RAF Neptunes, I wonder if there are other examples of this?
I can’t remember if I wrote the caption on my pic of WT121 but the McDonnell Douglas Putnam lists 5 Skyraiders (incl. WT121) which were wrongly marked in the US when being prepared for UK service….I’ve not seen any evidence that the error was ever corrected….and I think you may be right about mistake(s) with Neptune marking(s)

Looks like the ex-RN/ex-Swedish Skyraider I saw at Geneseo, New York, back around 1994.
You are indeed right – that’s the one! It is now at the USS Midway Museum in San Diego

WV106
You would think that somebody at Yeovilton would have the sense to source some space in one of their many hangars to store this old lady in.
Mind you it would probably require a cost centre and MOD would probably have to sign it off after a COSHH review…

WT983/WT121?
and the ‘cared-for’ one inside Cobham Hall in 2005

The not so good example is a disgrace, just think of the value of the airframe and engine in the States, really deserves to be loaned to an indoor collection somewhere.
BTW has anyone got a recent pic of the Midway example WT987?

One AEW.1 also exits in the USA aboard USS Medway.
😀
Medway is a river in Britain… and the associated town(s).
Midway is the name of the US carrier CV-41 (commemorating the battle at the islands of the same name).

Incidentally do you know if the pilot was ok or was he killed.? Not sure if it went straight in or crash landed..
Two killed sadly, and the third crewman seriously injured. Feb 24th 1960.

That would indeed be WT963 ‘425’.. which took off from Culdrose 24/2/60 apparently with smoke pouring from the engine, and as the pilot started to turn downwind the engine failed and it crashed into a field on/near the base.

I have some bits from a Skyraider AEW1 that crashed just outside the perimeter of CU in the late 50’s/early 60’s. I think it was WT963 but not entirely sure about that. Dad took me to the spot in about 1983 and I found quite a few bits on the surface just scattered around. Some still had the dark blue paint intact. An interesting twist was our next door neighbour had been stationed at CU at the time of the crash and had seen the accident. It crashed just about 150m to the West of ‘B site’ main hardstanding.
They are probably still in my parents’ loft assuming they haven’t been thrown out 🙁
