This photo is in our museum collection. It’s Wildcat JV576 of 772 Squadron at Ronaldsway in 1945. The aircraft previously served with 898 Sqn. We’ve pondered long and hard over the nose art but can’t identify it. Any suggestions?

Were beehives fashionable – or even thought of – then? (Not my area of expertise! :D) I did wonder if it was traditional Dutch headdress, but then there were other elements I couldn’t make work…

Playing around with the image on photoshop I can see a lady with a beehive ( different shade face and hair) The face also has a define it mouth and two eyes. So I would definitely propose a lady ( just not a pretty one!).

It’s a Rorschach test with nose art instead of ink blots! 🙂
Yes, that’s what I’d started thinking! There are some interesting interpretations above. Anybody for any more suggestions? I promise not to pass them on to my psycho-analyst. Dohh! What a give-away!

Yes – it popped into view now you’ve said it. A slightly unusual angle – rather like the better-known B-26 Miss Monie from the Korean War. Though the latter was rather better executed, it seems. Presumably there is a Vargas original?

I reckon it’s a blonde female, with long hair flowing towards the aircraft’s nose.
Her left arm is crossing her body, under her breasts.
There would to be brightly coloured lips to compliment the rest.

My vote is for a squid

But your nose art looks like “Humpy Dumpty” falling of his wall ??
That’s my 2 cents, hope it helps

To me its a cartoon Squid with a few tenticles missing (or not obvious in the picture).

It looks like a goldfish with a bomb, the style is similar to the fish in Fantasia.

It could be eroded paint but the rest of the airframe looks in good condition so we decided it was more likely to be some form of artwork. Here’s the full photo.

Nose art or damage to the paint?
