Fabric Aircraft Painting Query

That Hurricane at Biggin Hill was repainted (it seems) Without removing the fabric. Is that the case? And if you can, how do u rub it down? Or is there no need to do that on what must be a fairly rough surface?

I’ve recently repainted some fabric covered wings to change the registration on them. I used lots of water, 600 grit wet and dry and lots of care. A very messy job but it turned out ok. The aircraft concerned was covered with S**** Polyfiber but I don’t know what fabric is used on the Hurricane.
