🙂 I am in search of Fairey Battle photos,
especially any views of the cockpit ??
Can anybody help with info on a forgotten aircraft??
I involved in a nose section rebuild, would be nice to know rather than make educated guesses…I have already searched the WEB…

Quite surprised that no-one has already posted this, but L5343 is now back at Hendon – she arrived last week.

Thanks,
That makes it Sea Hurricane / Hurricane Mk. XIIA Serial BW872
Edit: Chris Charland on RAFCommands has supplied the following when I asked for pilot details
“Your man is 1608610 Sergeant R. A. Nash R.A.F.V.R.
The accident happened at 14:00 hours some 300 feet west of the air firing range on Lake. St. John. Nash carried out a bombing run on his target and then made a tight turn to exit the area and blacked out. He subsequently hit the water but managed to get out before the Hurricane sunk to the bottom of the lake.” – Sgt Nash was un-injured

The Subritsky Battle shows how the Australian Battles were cut in half to make sure they were never used again , I believe there are several forward fuselages like this around Australia .

…and totally wrong.
It is not the ex Charles Church Spitfire.
Charles Church had the ex Tom Voll Battle from Canada via Strathallan. It was substantially restored and potentially a flying project.
The fuselage and wing parts at Henlow was acquired by the RAFMus from somewhere to aid the the Iceland project, which had a burned out cockpit area.

Juest wanted to check you were not losing your marbles :p

JBS,
Please remind me. Which Battle is this that I photographed at the RAFMus store then at Henlow? It is not the Iceland machine.
From Canada?
Mark
Hi Mark,
This cannot be the remains of the Battle that crashed and were subsequently recovered from Iceland; the centre-section on that airframe was totally burnt out.
I believe this shot depicts the mortal remains of Mk.I L5340 which was used in the restoration of the RAF Museum’s Mk.I L5343 (the one nearing completion at MAPS) when she was first restored at RAF St. Athan.
This replaced the centre section of the airframe that was burnt out by the RAF recovery team in 1940 when a Very (spelling?) pistol was fired into it.
I also understand that this section was Canadian in origin, but arrived at Henlow via the Strathallan collection in Scotland.

PS.
This is the ex Charles Church Battle at point of exchange for the Belgian Spitfire. 🙂

Thanks for that JBS, just had a look at the SAAM website. It’s nice to know those wings are still in existance and being restored! Now to find out what happened to the part sectioned BMW003 that I helped restore!
Cheers

The wings for P2183 were stored outside the museum at RAF St Athan up until about ’92 (I’m not to sure if any other parts were recovered then incorporated into L5343 or whether the wings arrived on their own). I wonder if they are in storage with the RAF museum (Stafford or Cosford maybe?) or were sold on to another project. I just hope they weren’t scrapped:eek:. They certainly seemed to be a good basis for restoration.

I think I read in flypast that there are also some remains at Bruntingthorpe which are being used for a rebuild?
