Fairey Question

I have been contacted by a friend who knows of my aviation enthusiasm.
After the death of his father-in-law he has become aware of a couple of tea chests of “stuff”. My limited discussion suggests a mass of mixed electrical materiel but with quite a lot (including valves) wrapped in tissues marked Fairey Aviation.
I have been asked to explore options other than his mother-in-law dumping it all in a skip.
My initial reaction was NO! I will at worst find the right way to dispose of it, and at best find a home for the electronics.

Right now that is all I know, apart from the fact that his father-in-law worked in aerospace and that HIS father was involved in remote identification of aircraft (an upscale of radar?).
Is there anyone out there who could offer thoughts or help on the basis of ****** all information? All this stuff is in Kent. One option is for it to be retrieved and I catalogue it (up in darkest North Yorkshire) and then have another go in 4-6 months.

Ideas anyone?

Hi Steve611,
Two extra thoughts to add the ever increasing lists of suggestions.

Amberley Chalk Pits Museum (don’t laugh!) in west Sussex. There is a small dedicated aviation section within their larger radio / wireless / TV history building. Frequently has a ‘technical gent’ beavering away in the a radio shack. Collection includes a partial Lancaster replica bulkhead / frame that holds appropiate communications equipment.

Next, I think I recall a group using one of the small buildings near the V1 ski slope on Duxford airfield. They had an interesting display – but I cannot remember any details at some distance.

Steve

Bletchley Park would be worth a punt. They have a significant collection of slightly earlier radio equipment there, which is tended to by a very knowledgeable chap (whose name escapes me). His “hut” was stuffed to the rafters with similar items, which guaranteed may not have been aviation related, but he may be able to point you in the right direction, and who knows, may be able to shed some light on the valves and resistors at least.

Best of luck with your research.

Thanks Tony, I shall contact them. The current version of the story is a lot fuzzier than the original one. It is unclear which member of the family did what and “aircraft recognition” might actually have been wartime silhouette type stuff.

Best suggestion I can give you is contact

http://www.vmars.org.uk/History_Aims_Activities

http://www.vmars.org.uk/Vintage_Radio_Websites

involved in remote identification of aircraft (an upscale of radar?).

That sounds like he worked on IFF (Identification Friend or Foe)

Valves are expensive these days.

Its taken me a while to get the stuff of my friend. It looks like a lot of basic circuit components and valves. Where there are labels they state that they are for the Fairey Aviation Co Ltd, Hayes, Middlesex, (also CP6910 and FAC Ref 1412), which I believe dates them to 1959/60.

I have just started opening some of the boxes. Most boxes have a set of codes on them that didn’t seem to mean much until box 10.
A box of loose resistors 2.4K +/- 2%
A second label states HS resistor type 108
Drwg (drawing?) No Z219612
For ADA6/366916

CY1688 also appears.

Does any of this make sense to anyone?

Thanks- I will collect them and catalogue then ask for more specifics- I just wondered where to start asking, to be honest.

I’d suggest getting some pictures taken and posting them up on here for identification, or ask your friend to list the part numbers of the various bits.

Not bad. It was 24 degrees yesterday. 🙂
steve611.
I think you would at least need to know weather the ‘electronics’ were radar or radio related. There are radio groups like at Duxford or radar experts like the RAF Radar Museum that might be able to identify what is in those boxes.
