As you might have read, Lockheed Martin was given a contract for by the DARPA and the USAF for a preliminary design effort for a (reusable) hypersonic cruise vehicle HCV under the FALCON project.
See http://www.darpa.mil/body/NewsItems/pdf/falcon_ph2_t2.pdf
The picture available there contains 2 air vehicles.
The first is what I suppose to be the CAV, an unpowered, maneuverable, hypersonic glide vehicle (see pic 1)
The second seems to be the HCV, and this pic really thrills me! Of course I know that a blunt shape may be better at hypersonic speed than a sharply pointed one, remembering the nose of the space shuttle. (see pic 2)
But the difference to what has been shown as a hypersonic shape before (see pic 3) could not be greater!
There is also the air intakes that’s astonishing. Never seen something like this before! Is this a realistic proposal or is it pure fantasy?
Now to all the experts in hypersonics on this forum: what’s your opinion about this?
