…over Argentine claims on sovereignty!

I don’t suppose it’ll make a damn bit of difference to Argentina…
…but at least it will show anybody who is listening what the islanders actually want.

Cruise missiles aren’t going to be used against targets that might move, they will be used against ones that don’t move. Whilst it’s true that their aircraft could operate from roads, they’ll only be forced to do so if we attack all of their runways which I doubt we would considering they only have 10 to 20 working combat planes anyway. More important targets would be things like their fixed radar installations, command facilities, munitions and parts storage, and perhaps ports and ships in dock. Argentina’s A4s are not a concern, they’re museum pieces and will be massacred by modern aircraft.

@TonyT
That’s why you attack the things that don’t move.
But it is the things that do move that are the problem, and a jet can operate from a road if needed

But if the worst came to the worst I am sure the USA would give us a hand,

I somehow doubt that the US would want to get involved. I don’t think our
“Special Relationship”, extends that far.
Anyway, I doubt that this posturing will come to anything. Neither country
has the appetite for more bloodshed.

Trouble with that, first strike and you deploy to civilian airfields or roads, and as good as a cruise is, unless it is carrying a bucket of instant sunshine, your bang for your buck is severely limited.

With all due respect to the UK and RN, I’d bet their A-4s are more effective than the current RN Harriers.:D
I think the Argentinian gov would be more concerned about RN Subs lobbing
cruise missiles at all their airbases, dont you:D

In the same paper where I saw that story, I saw another about another round of defense cuts and 20,000 people cut from the Army.
Not ‘another round’ – just the latest tranche of already announced defence cuts to be fair.
If Argentina wants it, I’m not sure the UK military could do much about it.
Has someone magicked up a proper airforce or anything resembling an amphibious capability for Argentina whilst i’ve not been watching?

But fodder for Typhoons.
Face facts, argentinas military is stuck in the 1980’s because of the politicos fear of a military coup. They have about 16 airworthy fighters and just 1 or 2 airtankers available at any one time

With regard to the Falklands, the cuts to the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force are more worrying, however the best aircraft that the Argentine forces posses are the same ones they used in 1982…
…not the same type but the same actual airframes!
(Excepting the ‘new’ A-4 Skyhawks.)

Apparently 4000 redundancies are being sent out to Army, Navy and Air Force personnel today.
I think the 20,000 cut from the ‘Army’ refer to the total size reduction of the Army from over 100,000 to about 82,000 (which is bad enough) but many of these cuts have already happened and they are being spread over several years.

John, It’s surprising what some people will do when they hear the word, “OIL”
But if the worst came to the worst I am sure the USA would give us a hand,
