I wondered if there were any cases of family members i e Brothers,Fathers and Sons actually fighting AGAINST each other in any of the wars.
I know family members often fought on the same side in the same Squadrons,Regiments, navy fleets but actually fought or flew against each other.

I don’t know about brothers but an Austrian of Scottish descent a Mr Gordon McGollob ended up being a Luftwaffe Colonel (??) , he was ordered to drop the “Mc” part of his surname by the Reichsministrie – and apparently was quite a pilot . Does anybody have any further details ????

The chances of this happening.
I am sure I read in one famous RAF pilot biography that said pilot attacked a German bomber and that the bomber jettisoned its bombs, one of which killed one of his family members – a brother in law I think. South Wales comes to mind.

Many many years ago i remember reading a novel called the Sudden Sky by B Mitchelaard that was a story of 2 brothers ending up opposite each other.
Strange things happen in war, families split up,evacuated etc, makes you wonder. 🙂

I’m unveiling a memorial bench to a Belgian pilot who flew with the RAF, F/Lt Francois de Spirlet. In August 1941 he was involved in a combat in which he downed a 109, and was concerned that it may have been his half brother – who was flying with the Luftwaffe. Francois was born at Ayeneux near the border with Germany. Whether he ever did meet his brother in combat, or what happened to his brother I don’t know. Unfortunately I don’t even know his name.
