Certainly the FOSMA website no longer works.

I had the following message today:

Have you picked up that the Friends Of Stow Maries have been wound up? The aerodrome is run now by Trustees – I guess that’s a condition of the various grants they have had. They have been trying to integrate the Trust and the Friends but the Trustees have pulled the plug on the discussions and disbanded FOSMA. I’m not entirely clear how volunteering will work if at all, but FOSMA will have no role any more and our subs are being returned

Anybody know any more ? I don’t know how long ago this happened.
Maybe they want it run on a more professional basis, but they surely don’t want to alienate the volunteers ?

Another grant for work at Stow Maries was announced last week, this time for £200k from WREN. It is to be used to structurally refurbish four more buildings on the site, the night flying stores, motor transport workshop, Royal Engineers’ workshop and the pilots’ ready room. In addition, a Heritage Partnership Agreement has now been finalised, between the Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome Turust, English Heritage, and Maldon District Council. This defines what is and what is not of historical interest on the site (there are 24 buildings there which have Grade II* listed status) and makes obtaining listed building consent much easier when work is to be done on the site, especially the removal of non-period buildings.

It was a little “boggy” underfoot on Sunday, and very crowded. We left fairly early as the car park was getting cut up,
and I didn’t want to get stuck.

Today, BBC’s “Look East” is from Stow Maries. Not sure if it’s the mid-day or evening edition, or both ?

Gene is responsible for the idea of getting WW1 aircraft from NZ elsewhere to England year on year to advance education in the evolution of military aviation during the Great War – WAHT was formed this year to make this happen. All things being equal if funding is found this should start happening at Stow Maries once the temporary hangar is built in August. Watch this space and watch out for the Quadcopter video being posted shortly.

Wonder if biggles biplane will fly with them?

The answer is yes. We already have. Dropped into Old Warden last Thursday evening for a look-see and with aeroplanes and pilots out and about, it would have been rude not to!

Used up all my brownie points with the Missus though!

Might there be a chance that the two RAF B.E.2 are flown to the http://www.mothsatwoburn.co.uk/ meeting in August? Well, at least Geoffrey de Havilland was the designer of those great aircraft 🙂

PS! In case Hangelar doesn’t work out, how about Oberschleissheim (EDNX)… ?

;o) I would consider that but they won’t let me move my wwi hangar…. Denkmalgeschuetzt… and anyway it belongs to the Hangelar airfield (btw a law suit against the field has just been ‘shot down’)

yes I have the intention to use the most noise sensitive airfield in all of Germany and yes the first politician has already complained. (many more confirmations to come)

Well, I gather the airfield operators got rid of the binoculars with a built-in laser measuring device, which they used to monitor that pilots stick exactly to the published circuit (and to punish accordingly those who didn’t), so maybe it’s not so gloomy after all anymore…

Very brave initiative, I wish you all the best and look forward to seeing – and hearing – your beautiful collection here!

Thanks for sharing your plans with us. I look forward to seeing the S.E.5a over in the UK in due course – I was very impressed with it when it was shown at Oshkosh back in 2010

Time to shed some light on all of this. Yes I am German and yes I presently live in Dubai, yes I have the intention to use the most noise sensitive airfield in all of Germany and yes the first politician has already complained. (many more confirmations to come). I presently own a SE5a, the BE2e, and hopefully soon an Albatros DVa plus an original wwi hangar set up in 1917 (including wwii bullet holes) on the cited airfield St Augustin Hangelar. The Se5a is presently in Mannheim and I would like to move it to the UK as soon as possible to get it registered there. This AC will also be made available to WAHT as will the Alb Dva once completed. The idea is to operate all these AC’s throughout the wwi commemorative events and a variety of, predominantly British, airshows. It is my hope that by providing these they will form a nucleus around which the WAHT can evolve its activities. Furthermore there is a Fokker Dvii in the works. It had been started by a dedicated amateur builder in Germany and after thorough investigations I have come to the conclusion, that although far progressed I will need to replace the fuselage, moving parts etc. Fortunately the basic structure of the wings is usable (if one is content with a slightly higher stall speed). The engine is flight worthy and tested and the radiator is being built by the German firm of Manfred Schneider. Just as in the war this AC will be a late arrival. My long term goal is to establish a small flying museum in Hangelar combined with a repair shop and possibly a restaurant. Given my present occupation and location the time frame for this is +/- 5 years. If you are interested I have posted part of my collection: www.jasta11.com please excuse the somewhat amateurish website it is homebuild (couldn’t be a true German if I did not make one apology at least)…. The Fieseler Storch (C-3 WerkNo 1049) will be registered and based in Germany. Hope this helps Cheers Oliver

Hi Oliver,
thanks so much that you now confirmed all those rumors about your collection. Looking very much forward to the day when your aircraft reside at Hangelar airfield!

Hi Oli

Thanks for bringing your BE2 to the UK, many of us are drooling at the thought of seeing one back flying in the skies over dear old England.

Cheer’s.

Even though I live in Germany and follow the vintage aircraft scene closely, I’ve never heard of such airworthy WW1 aircraft in this country, nor of the collector, nor of anyone wanting to use the probably most noise-sensitive GA airfield in Germany as a base for aircraft of this type.

Time to shed some light on all of this. Yes I am German and yes I presently live in Dubai, yes I have the intention to use the most noise sensitive airfield in all of Germany and yes the first politician has already complained. Update from WAHT at http://ww1aviationheritagetrust.co.uk/?p=946

The BE2es in 7 Squadron (Odiham) and 37 Squadron (Stow Maries) colours will stay at Old Warden until arrangements at Stow Maries are complete later in the year.

The BE2es will be on static and flight line display and taking part in the Shuttleworth Shows when they are not supporting the planned WAHT events – 28th Jun Armed Forces Day (Stow Maries), 12/13th Aug BEF Deployment Commemoration (Dover, Arras),Fly In 6/7th Sep (Stow Maries), Goodwood Revival & Duxford (tbd) (13/14th Sep).

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned elsewhere, but I was told that the BE-2’s have arrived at Old Warden from NZ.
Can anyone confirm this ?

Edit:
Before anyone else mentions it, pictures on the Old Warden update thread 🙂
