Farewell Aeroflot's IL62s

From my own point of view I was sad to read today that Aeroflot has just retired the last of their fleet of Ilyushin IL62 aircraft. I know that the subject of Soviet (Russian) built aircraft tends to split us down the middle (we seem to either love ’em or hate ’em) but I hope you’ll agree with me that the Ilyushin IL62 brought Aeroflot into the true long haul jet era, it enabled many people in the Soviet bloc to venture far and wide who otherwise might not have done so, and, in my opinion at least, graced our skies with a beautiful and tidy design if wearing a somewhat utilitarian livery. Although they live on with a few smaller operators its definately the end of an era and the day when no more of these elegant beasts ply the airways can’t be far away.

Hi,

Even the russian manufacturers are designing new aircraft.

The Tu-334 regional jet is a example of this which deliveries will begin in 2004.

Hi,
As some people are scared by the aspect of going on Russian built type, I would love to go on the Tu-204! 😀

Thanks

Jeanske SN, I promised myself that I would’nt go down this path but I can’t let your view of Russian /Soviet safety records go unchallenged. The safety record of these aircraft, in particular the IL62/62M is no worse than most western types especially when compared in ratio to kms flown, pax numbers and the weather conditions that the majority of the flights of these types take place in. I have travelled on most types of Russian/Soviet airliners and have never been worried about the integrity of either these aircraft or the crews who flew them, How often has the cause of a crash of one of these types ever gone down to airframe failure? I grant you that in post-Soviet times things have by and large got worse, all of my trips were taken prior to the break up of the USSR so I don’t feel qualified to comment on this period. I can relate many tales to you of scary journeys that I’ve endured on Boeings, Lockheeds, MDCs, Airbuses, Fokkers etc, but it does’nt make them all bad……You’re not alone in this jaundiced view of Russian/Soviet aircraft so I don’t condemn you out of hand…Its just boring to see this trotted out time after time. And by the way, How many Western airlines give their flight deck crews daily pre-flight medical checks as Aeroflot used to do? Not many I think! I recommend anyone to view the 2hr C4 documentary “Aeroplanski” its fascinating where they show you one of these checks on a senior IL62 Capt. as well as lots more behind the scenes at the “old” Aeroflot.

thrust reversers

did you know all trident airliners could deploy reverse thrust in the air to slow the aircraft quickley ,its in the flight manuel and you can do it on the sim ,also you can drop the main gear sepratley (like the space shuttle).:D

Hi,

Oh and talking about unsafe, i ever saw a picture of an Il 62 when the thrust reversers were deployed five seconds before touchdown. Is this normal for this aircraft? I thought you could not deploy the reversers unless you are on the ground and travelling at a speed great enough to do so safely.

The IL-62 deployed the reversers before touchdown because it doesn’t have a high flap selection for landing (eg. 40).

finally

it’s time the eastern airlines should see that it is totally wrong to operate russian airplanes. I once flew on a Yakovlev, and i was fearing for my life! Look at the cockpits, they dont seem to understand we reached an age where FMC’s and LCD screens are IN.
Even the russian manufacturers are designing new aircraft, theres almost no future for it, maybe airforces would order it eventually. They are designing regional jets, pff no way! The answer to RJ’s: Avro, Embraer, Canadair, Bombardier.

IL62

nice looking a/c but being into british airliners you cant beat the good old VC10 nicer to look at and even better to fly on ,but another piece of history gone.

Hi,

The IL-62 is one of my favourite Russian aircraft and its a shame that Aeroflot are retiring them :(. Like Thomas Cook said Aeroflot are introducing more modern Western built aircraft into there fleet.

Hi,
Its a nice aircraft and its sad to see it going out of service with Aeroflot, but at least they are looking towards the future and modernising their fleet.

Here are some great pictures of the IL-62:

Although I’ve never been a particular fan of Soviet era airliners, I have to admire your passion and enthusiasm for them. You’ve summed the IL62 up nicely there. 😀
