Farman Shorthorn

Here’s an old and very poor image of a Shorthorn that I acquired in the UK. Has anyone any idea of where it might have been photographed?

A413? was part of a batch of 100 built at Hendon by the Aircraft Manufacturing Company and went to the RFC (it’s not in the RNAS batch). As it was used by 32 training sqn’s and many Depot units and with hundreds built, you have a tough job ahead. 🙂

So it looks as if this photo will have to continue with the tag “post war somewhere”!

Sorry. I can’t remember where I acquired the photo. It was definitely in the UK. Maybe in Sussex.

I’ve put the photo under the magnifying glass but I can only decipher part of the serial number, which is A413?.

Maybe wave that number at someone with a Great War numbers book – i.e. not me! 😀

Not enough in it to guess at a location for me. Any idea of a serial? Where did you get it – there’s an outside chance that might provide a clue.

It’s not well.

It’s either been left ‘outside’ with heavy cow attack or it’s the result of a heavy landing. Those are the wing panels which should be continuous with the centre section, all rigged straight. The Shorthorn had ailerons, not wing warping (or any flaps) and they were further outboard.

The wing sections were, indeed detachable (as was normal then) but that’s not right there. For comparison, here’s the RAAF Museum’s example:

Shorthorn

Hi A.A.;
You always find interesting stuff,the outer wing panels
look ascew.I know early types used wingwarping but
these look like very large flaps? Or were these detachable:confused:
