The latest airliner world magazine has just arrived offering limited tickets to a trade day at Farnborough.
Obviously I’m intrigued and want to know more about it. Has anyone been before? Is it wholly civil or are there military displays too? Is it worth looking into? Do you get to go around all the big passenger jets?
Any information welcome. 🙂

THE display of 2002 was the F-18, knocked the socks off the newer, supposedly more agile fighters.
I think you’ll find the F-18 was an F-18F; a Super Hornet, which IS a new generation, agile fighter!

What airport is closest to Farnborough?
I may try and go, provided I can get my parents to agree and that we’re not on holiday!
LHR,LGW and Southampton are closeish. From LHR you can get the railair coach to Woking then a train, Farnborough main station is two stops down. For LGW the trains to Reading stop at North Camp every hour I think. From Southampton airport station again I think its every hour to Farnborough Main station. Farnborough main and North Camp are about 15 min walk to the show site if the busses are packed. Its probably the easiest show in the UK to do by public transport.

north camp is the closest station to the airport, with farnborough main not to far either i would say from north camp around a 8 min walk and from farnborough main around 10 min walk
There is a FREE bus service from North Camp station into the show site, or at least there has been at previous shows.

Ah yes forgot about Northcamp, it has a direct train link to Gatwick airport taking about an hour.

The trains are to Farnborough station, from which there are buses provided on a very regular basis (I should know I had to help organise them for my work experience in 2002 SHUDDER).
Buses also run from Aldershot I think, but Farnborough is on the main line, Aldershot isn’t.

I went to one of the public days in 2000, and vowed never to go again – good weather, combined with a huge crowd and a poorly laid out site made for a thoroughly unpleasant day.
The vow only lasted two years, as I bought some tickets for a Trade Day in 2002 – the contrast was amazing – minimal crowds made for a fantastic day out. The flying display is somewhat shorter on the Trade Days (no Red Arrows, BBMF etc) – only just over 2 hours on the 2002 day, but very well run. THE display of 2002 was the F-18, knocked the socks off the newer, supposedly more agile fighters.

Thanks for that. 🙂

Aldershot, I believe.
It’s within reasonable walking distance of Farnborough, and there used to be a very nice Dakota gate-guardian at Aldershot barracks.

A direct train link to where?

I won’t answer that with the obvious one, but Southampton has a direct train link, and Heathrow and Gatwick have indirect train links, taking 45 minutes,45 minutes, and 1 hour 30 minutes respectively (My average trip time anyway)

i am studying aerosapce at farnborough, right oposite the airport, and it is already taking shape. if you want to get a sneek preview come to farnborough the week before the airshow, becasue all the planes land, and any that are in the air display, practice to get clearance. so if you wana see the planes with out the crowds, you can not get into the airport, but there is a pub right on its bounday.

I will be encamped for both the show and arrivals week as its only a 5 min drive for me!2002 was dissapointing as the An140 and Embraer 170 both left on the Wedensday, and some others(C-17,A330?) had left by the public days.
2004 promises lots of US military participation and lots of bizjets(they have their own park Mon-Wed). Plus there were plenty of visiting bizjets etc in the mornings of the show days.
Forget about the whole trade days thing, anybody can buy tickets on the website for the trade days(no under 16’s though). Just turn up looking resonable and all will be ok. And at £25 thay are not much dearer than public tickets. I did go on the public Saturday as I had spare trade tickets last time and traffic was hell, so I walked!
The arrivals week is normall good, very busy thurs-sat am. Had a An12 and An124 support aircraft last time. Not so good for viewing from outside as it used to be but Eelmoor Bridge is great for photos if 06 is in use or for heavies rolling to the end of 24.
I will have loads of info on my website www.farnboroughairport.biz about viewing. Plus a daily update on the arrivals and the first photos in the world(again) of the arrivals.

So everyone reckons Farnborough is a must? I only ask as its a very very long drive from my house! I’ve spoken to my parents and they seem up for it so fingers crossed! May I ask what sort of access to the a/c you get and what types of a/c usually do flyovers? Thanks alot in advance.
