Fate of the other 5 Avro Ashtons

Elmdon Boy: re your post no. 4. On 1 August 1961 I was at Farnborough visiting the Institute of Aviation Medicine (I was a medical student, and with Oxford UAS) for a flight in their Canberra and made the most of the opportunity to note other interesting aircraft. I saw Ashton WB491 but, like you, no sign of WB492.

Was the Ashton cockpit and fuselage the same as the Avro Tudor? Or was it converted from the Avro Tudor?

According to Wikipedia it was WB493.

Which was the Avro Ashton that featured in the film ‘Cone of Silence’, which was shown on television within the last few days? Was it WB493?

WB492 was written off at RAF Defford with the RRE. There was a fire when the aircraft was taxying, crew got out ok but aircraft damaged beyond repair. There are a couple of pictures of it at Defford in 1956 minus its tail section and wings, obviously before it went to Farnborough.

I see the third built WB492 went to Farnborough for structural tests, I wonder when it was scrapped. I never saw one during my spotting years which was in the 60s although I went to Farnborough for the early 60s SBAC shows.
