Fauvel Glider

Hi all, I’m being a pest again. Do any gliding types out there have any experience of flying the Fauvel? There was one in our hangar at Detmold, Germany in the mid 60s and I thought then that it looked like a nice piece of kit. Just wondering what the handling was like.

Interesting, I didn’t know they made a two seater. I suppose it would have been neccesssary to teach the handling differences between the Fauvel and a conventional glider.

Ian Dunkley at Camphill has a Av22 and a Av36 two seater. these have not flown for some years now. I dont know if he’s there at the moment, as he spends half of the year in New Zealand.

There are few in france in flying condition, a friend of mine had an aerobatic routine with her and it was really superb, so i know some people can do good flying with her …one is based in Melun just south east of paris for 15Nm…it is AMPAA base (AD4, TBM, Storch, T6, Po2, Tiger moth, IL10!!!, etc etc )

There’s a Fauvel in one of the hangars at Old Warden, which IIRC is owned by Sir John Allison and is presumably the same aircraft mentioned above.

I last saw it a couple of years ago, and judging by the build-up of dust on it, it’s not been flown for a good long while.

I haven’t flown one, but remember watching “The Budgie”, a well known UK Fauvel going through an impressive aerobatic routine, flown by Jerry Berringer at Dunstable some years ago. It was subsequently bought by AVM Sir John Allison and I last saw it in a hangar at RAF Halton with his other gliders. Apparently it could be a handful on take off and landing with a reputation for inducing PIOs (pilot induced ocillation) if sudden pitch changes weren’t anticipated and handled correctly. Interesting but ultimately unsuccessful concept.

They got one in Vaasa, Finland. They were going to test flight it this summer, but maybe it was too much for them? :p
