Favorite 8th Airforce Mustang Scheme

Just sitting at my desk pondering on the various paint schemes applied to Mustangs during service with the 8th Airforce in the UK during WWII and was wondering what peoples favorite schemes are? Pictures to illustrate would be great as it’s a dull old day outside and would certainly brighten things up.

Cheers

Did you ever build the Airfix model of that one?? I went through a brief Mustang phase, and had mine hanging from the ceiling with my Revell-based “Memphis Belle”. Both sadly confined to the bin later on in life, though! 🙁

The red two-seat P-51B-1-NA 43-12193(See The Debden Eagles by Garry L. Fry p.93) or alternatively the PR. blue one with red nose p.96 (Note the rear Malcom hood p.96)

Thanks Martin, I didn’t know this one existed until someone posted a link elsewhere. Looks like a great place for warbird and historical discussion, glad I found it.

BTW, have you recieved any emails of mine lately? I sent you a few about the P-51 parts manual you mentioned to me over at the Mustangs board. I think you have my main addy, please let me know if the extra copy is still available.

Cheers

As good a place to make my first post on this forum as any! My favorites are the P-51s of the 361stFG. (But then I’m partial to them anyway!)

Welcome Craig – good to see you here.

My favourite 8th Airforce Mustang scheme is the 78th FG’s “Big Beautiful Doll”.
I have always liked the black-and-white chequerboarding on the nose complete with red edging stripe. It looks a simple, yet bold scheme.

For a P-51B model, my favourite scheme is Don Gentile’s “Shangri-La” of the 4th FG.

Regards,

Paul

Has to be the 352nd Fighter Group from Bodney, The BlueNosers. With Major George E. Preddy Jr leading the way in the E.T.O. !

I am not sure whether this fits this topic however my favourite scheme I have seen on a mustang would have to be Jumpin’ Jacques.

as for operational Mustangs, i.e. carrying colors into combat, I think the 356th FG is neat:

Love that picture, that’s given me a great idea for a model diorama! I live only six miles from Martlesham Heath, and would be very interested to know where on the airfield that picture was taken. 😉

I do like the 55th FG markings, “Mille G”, “Miss Veronica” etc, but I also really like the 353rd, and of course the 78th FG’s B/W checkerboard. 🙂

Hofer.

Hi all
My favourite is ‘Kid’ Hofer’s P-51B ‘Salem Representative’. White wall tyres, OD top surfaces, Malcom Hood, ‘The Kid’ painted on the undercarriage door.
All time fav here.
Cheers
Andy.

Dan – well spotted. It is indeed one of those split canopy two seat conversions. I have seen about half a dozen such conversions so far. Some of these planes were fitted with a second seat and additional radio equipment for relay duties while others simply had a jumpseat installed for taxy/passenger-flights.
