Favorite Aviation Videos

I’ve recently discovered that I can buy an NTSC/PAL video player here in the US, and possibly even a multi-zone DVD player.

With that in mind what are your favorite Aviation films? By that I mean the ones that are not available on a world wide basis, like “Battle of Britain”, “Piece of Cake” and “12 O’Clock High”.

Any really good airshow videos?

Don’t be shy. Australia, Germany, Holland??? I’m sure you guys have some good stuff to share.

Well………..

I hesitate to mention this, but

………………..

I’ve been transferring the videos I took at the RNAS Yeovilton airshow and the Delta Jets open day at Kemble last year to DVD.

I don’t think they’re particularly good, as I haven’t had much experience with the camera – but the dots in the skys (usually grey over Yeovilton) look vaguely aircraft like.

But if anyone wants a copy, I don’t mind sharing for the cost of postage and a DVD blank disk – say £6 for yeovilton (2 DVDs 19th & 20th Sep) UK and £4 for Kemble.

Let me know by PM if you want one or both.

I didn’t get everything, so if you want to know whether or not your favourite kite appears, let me know.

(I’m also doing one of my holiday in Sosua, but while, for some reason it looks better (probably the great sunlight), I don’t think I’ll be sharing that – no aircraft anyway.)

Daz, this is a compulsary read for anyone remotely interested in the making of the film. From a collecting point of view it is the 1969 hardback (published by George Wiedenfeld & Nicolson Ltd )that is the Holy Grail. Plenty of paperbacks still about.

This is great stuff!

I feel like I’ve found the Holy Grail of aviation videos.

A really good series available here in the States is “Roaring Glory Warbirds”. Started by the late Jeff Ethell and later with Steve Hinton each episode is basically a walk around and cockpit checkout, followed by some air-to-air work. The second half of the show is a rather silly reenactment by some 19 year old actor trying to convey a sense of combat.

Titles on DVD include the P-51, Zero, TBM, P-38, P-47, Hellcat and Corsair. There are more available (like the B-25, B-17 and P-40) on video.

I have also confirmed that multiregion DVD players are avaialble, as well as NTSC/PAL VCRs that will play on US televisions.

I agree about “Twelve O’Clock High”, and in similar vein “The War Lover”

We’re huge Audrey fans here, so I can’t lose when I watch ‘Always’! A lovely, underrated little film.

The Warbirds Over Wanaka films from NZ are always excellent. They are all still available.

I would absolutely love to track down a copy of the Piece of Cake series. I saw it when it first aired here in NZ (1988?), but stupidly never recorded it. I was only young.

PS – to fans of the film Battle of Britain (1969) I highly recommend the book of the same name by Leonard Mosley, which is about the making of the film. He was a reporter who followed the entire process from sourcing the planes to filming to arguments with Adolf Galland over the Nazi salute. A fascinating book.
