What is your favorite beyond visual range air-to-air missile?
My favorite is the AIM-120D AMRAAM.

What’s your favorite?

Re: post 1
I find it quite extraordinary that anyone could have a ‘favourite’ missile, whether BVR or any other type. I can understand having a favourite aircraft, ship, train, car or even bus, but an airborne weapons systems is difficult to comprehend!
I have some knowledge of such things, having been part of a Joint Services Trials Unit at the experimental establishment at Boscombe Down, testing a new missile system for the Royal Air Force. Like the rest of the team, I was proud of our work in preparing the system for operational use, but would never consider it as one of my favourite things! It’s a strange old world.
What’s strange? People have favorite colors, favorite drinks, favorite songs, movies, and damn near anything else you can think of. Why not missiles?

Re: Favorite BVR missile
It is difficult to evaluate which missile is best because weapons designers can’t agree on what design aspects are the most needed. Even with WVR missiles, some designers want a missile with as much speed and range as possible for head-on shots. Others feel the high off-bore-sight is what is needed most while others feel the missile must carry as much energy for post-merge LOAL intercepts. We civilians can guess about our favorites but, until a significant conflict breaks out, it will be difficult to prove which is best. It is not just the designers, air forces have different opinions on how the missiles are to be used and what are the best tactics.
Don’t assume AWACS or some other HVAC are vulnerable. They have their own EW that is seldom discussed. Another is the towed decoys that can be reeled out a half mile or so behind the HVAC to lure missiles.

It should have a NATO codename: AA-14 Asteroid
(because the Novator R-172 races toward its juicy airborne AWACS / ISR target like an asteroid).

USS.

Is it just me, or was the ASALM the missile launched at Superman?
Silver Surfer got hit with a Talos (albeit a baby one). 🙂

The image above the R-77PD is a Chinese ramjet-powered PL-12.

KS-172
Big beast. Big punch. Big range.

Another one is the Vympel R-77 (AA-12 Adder), or AMRAAMski.

My fav has to be the one that hits the other guys plane..
or hmm the mk1 photon torpedo.
Has anyone made swarming AAM?
By: SOC - 9th August 2009 at 22:26
I thought we were speaking of missiles that were/are in service…
I did not know that ASALM had an A2A mode.
Well, R-37 and KS-172 were mentioned and are either not in service (R-37) or exist only as hype right now (KS-172)…and ASALM was at least flight tested in PTV form.
Is it just me, or was the ASALM the missile launched at Superman?
If that wasn’t ASALM then they did a pretty good job of mimicking one!

Well, we were talking BVR AAMs…..
So the only Nuke AAM ever put into service = Hughes GAR-11/AIM-26 Falcon
Yeah, but the ASALM did have an air-to-air mode, and it was nuke armed.

ASALM complete with nuke.
That takes the cake I guess..

AIM-120 AMRAAM variants…
Other than that…..
Ultra long range…
R-37 (and maybe KS-172/R-72)

Same here
Aim-120D:
1. GPS INS
2. 2-Way Data Link
3. 3rd party targeting and mid-course updates
4. Decent HOBS even though no TVC
5. Optional Lob-Shot Profile
6. Really long range (50+ mile)
7. Enhanced ECCM and HOJ
etc, etc
Just wait till JDRADM….
