Blimey someone who likes RT!! – Richard Thompson is truly the planet’s best (largely unknown) guitar god. Yes, I go to Cropredy, but only RT years – present day Fairport are fun, but hardly essential.
For Kabir T, Richard Thompson DID make the Rolling Stone Top 100 Guitarists list at number 19 I believe.
As for jazz guitarists, how about the great Martin Taylor

Hey I dont go much on those polls, after all they’re only someones opinion.
Anyone whos taken the time to learn guitar, and take it further almost to virtuosity, gets my vote as a good guitatist.

We talk about Rock guitarists on here but nobody mentions jazz guitarists or classical, These people are at the top of the tree, as it were, when it comes to playing guitar.

Can anyone name any jazz or classical virtuosos?

My favourite jazz man is Kenny Burrell

Dave

yes hendrix was 1…….he always is….and i dont question that hes simply great.

I am not into jazz mych but classical yes…stuff by Vinnie Moore and the master Chet Atkins.

Now then Flood you have nudged my memory a bit there, some fantastic artists. In particular the Roger Waters ‘Amused to death’ what a phenominal piece of work that is, I must find my copy and play again.
Somebody mentioned ‘I drove all night’ by Cyndi Lauper, Umm whilst she did cover it I believe the original and superb version was by the god Orbison. I am a firm believer that poor old Roy would have been named the ‘king’ had not some other southern GI type had a bit of a sing song. He is so much better (IMHO) than Elvis.

Where to start…
My musical tastes range from the mellowness of Tori Amos through to the manic screaming of Ministry (NOT ‘Of Sound’!).
In the past 4 days the sound system in my car has been helping me along life’s highway to the sounds of:- the entire PJ Harvey catalogue, Nine Inch Nails, Fluke, Everything But The Girl, Faithless, Fugazi, Leftfield, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kosheen, The Chemical Brothers, Garbage, and The The.
One day – when I have the time to transfer them to CD or (ha!) I find them in the shops and I have the money – I might get the chance to drive and listen to the hundreds of tapes I have:- Pink Floyd, Sisters Of Mercy, Frank Zappa, Siouxsie And The Banshees, New Model Army, Dead Kennedys, Propaganda, The Doors, Peter Gabriel, Killing Joke, Revolting C0cks, Lard, Sheep On Drugs, Nomeansno, The Clash, Sugar Cubes, Janes Addiction, Luscious Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Donald Fagen and Al Stewart. (Er, just in case you hadn’t realised that is what faces me just to the left of my computer work desk – must try and get them in alphabetical order some time… There are more behind them, and more piled up on top of the bookcase and some more in cassette holders, and probably some in a box under the stairs.)
On the CD system (a 5 disc changer by Panasonic) at the moment I have Moby (18), Massive Attack (Blue Lines – with Unfinished Sympathy on it, fantastic!), Faithless (Sunday 8PM – with She’s My Baby – Maxi Jazz paying homage to his car), The Chemical Brothers (Singles 93-03, but still trying to get used to them not running straight into the next track), and PJ Harvey (To Bring You My Love – pure brilliance by a true goddess). In the car at the moment I have Roger Water’s Amused To Death. Somewhere around here there is a multi-disc set (5? 8? Can’t remember!) of Wagner’s Gotterdammerung (not sure of the spelling, and it is bound to have umlauts interspersed in it, too!) which takes days to listen to if the phone rings, if you have to go to work, or the cat drags something in…
Not a fan of boy bands, girl bands, kids singing ANYTHING especially in schools, anything where the singer or group name-check themselves all the time, country and western (although I do have Constant Craving by kd lang somewhere), new wave skater punk, boring soul, the currently regarded ‘popular’ but just bland and safe non entities in the charts, and extremely lazy cover versions (if it really, really must be done… DO IT TOTALLY DIFFERENT! Smoozin’ to Riders On The Storm had already been done, who ever you were! Thank you.).

The song I would really like to hear again is Charlton Heston by Stump which, if I remember correctly, was some sort of mickey-take on Charlton being Moses and putting his vest on (?), had the backing vocals of frogs, and something like ‘Lights, camels, action!’ somewhere in the lyrics. Well, that and Half Man Half Biscuits ‘All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit’, but I am sure I could probably find that on an album in a music shop if I really tried…

Flood.

Most kinds, except cheesy pop sh!te

Anything with a good sound to it, so I have more of a broad range of tastes – a lot of singles (and MP3s) but nothing in particular!

Bought Dido’s single “White Flag” and The Black-eyed Peas “Where is The Love” – haven’t quite managed to drive my folks mental with it yet!! 😉

Last album I bought was “0304” by Jewel – very good.

Any music that would make a good background to some fast driving through twistie roads or fast low flying through twistie valleys (I have to imagine that bit) does me. By default this is from the faster and/or heavier end of the spectrum. Having said that, you need some good slow cruising music for being out on the road on a hot summers evening, i.e. the Boys of Summer – Don Henley, I drove all night – Cyndi Lauper, California Dreaming, Sittin on the Dock’o the bay – Otis Redding.

I recommend Cheb Mami, Khaled, Rachid Taha and Faudel.

Cheb Mami is the same guy who worked with Sting on Desert Rose right?

Good! Then you must be the right person to ask: i have been getting interested in North African music after hearing some stuff by Khaled, and especially Rachid Taha (of course Barra Barra from the Blackhawk Down soundtrack). Are there any other artists or particular songs you can recommend? I particularly like Taha’s mixture of North-African music and more European anarcho-punk stuff. I will owe you one!

I recommend Cheb Mami, Khaled, Rachid Taha and Faudel.
