OK – I hope this hasn’t been aired before. We’ve had the opinions from the great and the good (and me) about over-ated and under-rated guitarists. What about your favourite guitar solo? Doesn’t have to be fast, just something special. Very subjective, I realise but let’s start with:
California – Manfred Mann’s Earth Band (Chris Thompson) – also a fantastic vocalist
Shine On You Crazy Diamond – Pink Floyd (Dave Gilmour)
Stark Raving Love – Jim Steinman/Bad for Good (Davey Johnstone (now with Elton John))
Lovehunter (Live) – Whitesnake (Mickey Moody)
Space Truckin’ (Live) – Deep Purple (Ritchie Blackmore)

BADGE by Eric Clapton with the Cream
CONFORTABLY NUMB by Glimour with Pink Floyd
THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME by Jimmy Page with Led Zeppelin
ONE by Kirk Hammett with Metallica (Intro and Solo)
LITTLE WING by him.

David Evans….aka The Edge, especially in Miracle Drug around 3mins in.
Personal favourite Evans moment is the Hendrix-esque solo in the live version of ‘Bullet The Blue Sky’. As far as Edge-U2 moments go, I have to hand that award to his bassline on ’40’.
And good on Adam Clayton to treat us to a front of house performance of ‘New Year’s Day’ at Hampden Park, Glasgow the other week.

Not to mention the mighty Stu Hamm’s quite blinding “bluegrass banjo” bass solo on the “Joe Satriani Live In San Francisco” DVD……. 😮 😮 😮

Anyone into Joe Satriani?

I agree with most of the above.
I’m off to see the Yardbirds tonight. Yes they are still going. So hopfully the influence of their Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page years will still be very prevalent.
I haven’t heard it in years, but I seem to remember the guitar in John Miles’s “Music”, was pretty stirring stuff. Anyone want to concur?

Dimebags solo in Domination by Pantera. RIP

Mike Amott’s solo in Buried Dreams (Carcass)
Dave Mustaine’s solo bit in the extended live version of Symphony of Destruction (Megadeth…duh). And I mean the original way he played it, not the way he played it on the TWNAH tour.
Damn near anything by Bill Steer (Carcass)

Touch choice.
Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple) – Highway Star
Flex 35
Which version? Studio or live (eg from Made in Japan)? I prefer Space Truckin’ from Made in Japan personally.
I’d also forgotten how sublime the solo from “Firth of Fifth” by Genesis was – thanks for the reminder, Grey Area. Mark Radcliffe played it on his Radio 2 show fairly recently.

I know the Mason Williams version, a surprise hit in 1969-ish but I think it’s the only one I’ve ever heard.

AFAIK, I’ve got all of Clapton’s recordings but I’ve never heard of him doing Classical Gas. What’s it on?
Its a solo guitar version of Classical Gas originaly done by Mason Williams.
