Favourite War Movies / themes

Which war movies do people here find the best and why ? Also what are the best war movie themes ?

My selection of movies, not in any order:

a. Saving Pvt. Ryan: realistic, accurate attention to details, does not glorify war.

b. The Deer Hunter: What a story ! again does not glorify war

c. The killing Fields: true story again no glorification of war.

d. Memphis Belle: I liked the fact that an entire movie can be made on one mission. Again quite realistic.

e. Last of the Mohicans: What Music !!! Fantastic battle scenes and amazing photography

f. Thin Red Line: Very philosophical, superb photography, especially the use of natural light and shadows. apparantly shot on location in Guadalcanal.

I basically like movies that show war as hell, none of that good guy / bad guy crap. Any movie that shows that there are human beings on both sides of the guns deserves my vote.

Best Sound Tracks:

a. Last of the Mohicans: My favourite CD and I can never get tired of listening to it, even after 6 years.

b. Deer hunter: Cavatina from John Williams is really deep and touching.

c. Operation Daybreak: Has anyone heard the sound track of this flick ? Its a movie from the early 80’s and am not sure if the available for sale. If anyone can tell me where to get it, i’d be really obliged. The movie is also a good one, with a great score.

d. Das Boot: The animal in me likes that Techno version 😉

Any recommendations on similar points guys ?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-04-02 AT 01:15 PM (GMT)]Arthur,

Don’t tell me you went into this film expecting historical accuracy?? And I have yet to see it BTW, I never go around to it on that day, but will soon. I will give you my play on it later. 🙂

Funny about the B-52 strikes though, on the official website they are mentioned as part of the history, but obviously not part of the film. 🙁

Note: Not surprising I guess but my local paper has given the film 4 stars.

Regards, Glenn.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-04-02 AT 11:12 PM (GMT)]Actually… I’m watching Hunt for Red October again, and I’d forgotten how great that soundtrack is. Obviously the Russian voice choir stays in the mind, but the orchestral and electronic music is fantastic, adding real tension and atmosphere to the proceedings.
‘Course, the film’s good. They just had a Perry class frigate fire a shot across the Red October’s bow; of course, it had to turn to open up the fire arcs for the 76mm gun, and this was shown and actually mentioned in dialogue! YES! Astoundingly, Hollywood can do technical accuracy.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-04-02 AT 08:44 PM (GMT)]Well…Battle of Britain has to be my favourite…not so much for the plot, but for the Spitfires…and the sight of Duxford recreated as a wartime Battle of Britain station…

And as for war theme…I can’t BELIEVE none of you have mentioned Dambusters?!?

Grrrrrrrrrr 😉

By far my favourite of the war themes 🙂

Crap War Movies

Jag , U are right, Pearl Harbour the movie was the biggest piece of crap I have ever seen, and the hype they made of this film – unbelievable. I actually played hookey from work to see the flick !!

I was also very dissapointed with Enemy at the Gates. It was a great story – the showdown between Zaitsev and Koenig. What dissapointed me were the historical inaccuracies in the movie – example the scene where Koenig shoots Zaitsevs friend when he was jumping over that parapet – impossible shot !. Also there was no kid spying on Koenig and the last sequence where Zaitsev shoots Koenig is wrong. koenig was hiding under an asbestos/ metal sheet when Zaitsev shot him, after selling koenig a dummy.

I dont mind a fictional war story in a movie, but if its based on a true story, it damm well be made exactly as that.

I generally dont like the movies made between the 60’s – 80’s the general theme is the allies are the good guys and the krauts not worthy of the bullets that got them. Any allied soldier that gets killed dies after giving a few tear jerking sentences, whereas the krauts get swatted like flies. An exeption in this for me was ” A Bridge too far” and “Operation Daybreak”.

I ask again does anyone know where to get the sound track of Operation Daybreak: Please let me know if you do.

RE: We were soldiers – review

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-04-02 AT 04:41 PM (GMT)]But it’s a recent military film starring Mel Gibson, directed by the guy who wrote Braveheart and Pearl Harbor – it positively must be inaccurate. It’s the law!
I’m only surprised they didn’t have 1960s US troops going into battle to the tender strains of “My Way” by Limp Bizkit. At least that’d be entertaining…

We were soldiers – review

Oh Glenn… did you find ‘We were soldiers’ just as terrible as I did? Man, there was some excellent aviation stuff in that film (the half-a-second sequence of a taxiing F-100 was the best part of the entire feature) but did the whole film SUCK!

A few minor historical details missed in that film as well…
– Moore’s 1/7 CAV was withrawn the morning of day 2. Another battalion relieved his unit, so Moore was definately the last one off the ground.
– Where were the Arc Light missions, targeting only some 1 km away from US troops? Now THAT would have made interesting footage!
– Indeed, several US troopers were hit by friendly napalm (friendly napalm? Oh, very friendly: nice and warm, and it just won’t go away }>)but that was because they were dispersed amongst the NVA, and appearantly not because of too-close targeting.

Arthur

RE: Favourite War Movies

The Sound Track to the last of the Monhnicans is amazing..and movio is prety good.

Personaly i like the movies in ancient times and middle ages.. Agincourt was good the naval fight in Ben hur is one of the most amazing scences ever,, the starting fight in gladiator is prety good. Of ww2 films i liked Enemy at the Gates.

And the worst movies have to be “Pearl harbour”.. sorry after being so much interested in the event and doing bit of a research on it, the movie absolutely disapointed me… And the biggest pile of crap was and is Behind the enemy lines.

And yes i strongly recomend the film SAVIOUR with Denis Quaid ,,, only western made movie that comes close to representing war in bosnia.. though the story line is bit questionable.

RE: Favourite War Movies / themes

Any very well done WW2 films, like Patton, D-Day, Saving private Ryan, Midway, Great Escape, etc..

Some Vietnam films are worthy, I will get around to seeing Mel Gibson’s new film today, ‘We were Soldiers’.

My favourite theme is the music from ‘633 Squadron’.

RE: ok

I would agree with a lot of the choices here, especially Saving Private Ryan, Cross of Iron, Das Boot and Memphis Belle. I would also add in Enemy at the Gates and (perhaps slightly controversially) Top Gun – crap story, but some really wonderful flying sequences.

RE: Favourite War Movies / themes

Favourite war movies? probably too many too list. If I wrote five down I’d only end up thinking of ten more.

In no particular order I’d choose:
Saving Private Ryan
Went the Day Well superb b/w film from the 40’s.
In Which We Serve (same as above)
Gallilopi (appropriate for ANZAC Day)
Blackhawk Down

As for the music, the instantly recognisable 633 Squadron, the soundtrack for Zulu, and although not a movie theme, suite two from the Band of Brothers, a 9 minute piece of heaven!
