I was just thinking (as one does when they have no girlfriend *sob*) about the export potential of the FC-1. This aircraft is being co-developed by Pakistan, so Pakistan does not count as an export customer.
I somehow doubt this aircraft will sell too well on international markets.
Here’s a list of potential customers that I see:
Egypt – just acquired K-8. There are still lots of MiG-21’s that need replacing while it is unlikely that the US will bankroll sufficient numbers of F-16’s to replace them all. The Gripen and Rafale are too expensive. So I can see Egypt perhaps acquiring some FC-1 in the future.
Bangladesh – though they have acquired new F-7’s but a mid-to-long term buy is highly possible as Bangladesh is an old time customer for Chinese weapons.
Myanmar – They’ve just acquired MiG-29’s but I can see them buying some FC-1 too as they have close ties with China
Zimbabwe – if they ever have money. Their economy is ruined though.
And that’s it. Everyone else either has access to cheap F-16’s or cheap MiG-29’s. Even Iran is an unlikely buyer as they did not think highly of the F-6 and F-7.
Any thoughts?
