FE2B

Hi all,
I am trying to identify a prop previously owned by my grandparents. It appears to be two halves of a single prop both mounted on wooden plinths . Each is approx 4ft 6 ins in length suggesting the original prop wood have been between 9 and 10 feet in length. They are made of a reddish wood and have brass wrap overs at each tip. Both have transfers containing the following, ” Boulton Paul of Norwich in association with Howes and Son. The following information is also stamped into base of each; Bearmore FE2B BOP No3 AID780. 11544. Any info would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks. Steve. I have now posted photos of the prop below. I think they are worth seeing.

They appear much larger and correctly oriented when you click on the photo itself, so all is good.

Quite easy to imagine of someone who perhaps has little knowledge of aircraft and only a passing interest.

In the rarified atmosphere of a few individuals with a shared interest we can overlook that others may not know what we take for granted and assume they share what we would term ‘basic knowledge’ of the subject.

HI steve
Welcome to the forum
The easiest way to put pics on here is to use photobucket or similar, upload your pics to (say) photobucket and it will be automatically sized for forums when you then upload to here !

I’ll leave the detail of getting photos off an iPad to someone else, but here is my most relevant photo of TVAL’s first F.E.2b’s prop, with scale reference points 🙂

A complete prop should look something like this –

Though this example owned by The Aeroplane Collection has suffered from many many years outside attached to a gate!

The markings often wear with time/use so can be difficult to read. You are right that 80HP is too little! Many companies used decals – they were very resilient. Chances are your prop was used. Best way to tell is any wear around the hub area where it bolts on. You also sometimnes get oil there too.
Would love to see photos. I love props and trench art from props!
