Just thought i would try this out with air fans here on the forum.
How difficult would it be for an airforce to start flying motherships? I am talking about an airforce equivilent of a Aircraft Carreer.
1) The idea of the mother ship is not to hold or carry manned aircraft but to hold within it self a 5 man comand and control unit along with a swarm of 20/30 medium to large size manouvreable drones.
2) The mothership would be used to control the swarms with little input as possibly needed to complete a given mission, it would also use the LM laser defence system.
3) Its powerplants would be something in the order of the GEnx engines powered using alternate fuels to traditional aviation fuels.
4) The engines will be used to power aircraft flight while fuel cells and solar panels mounted on the surface will be used to power the internal systems.
5) The mothership however at minimum have radars, similar to the green pine on it with a detection range (for small targets, F-16s/gripens etc) of 400 miles and above with a feild of view of near 360 degrees. And will have the agility to be converted to directed energy weapon.
6) It will be designed to land and take off from unprepared airfields
7) Will carry munitions that are both A2G and A2A for the swarm of UCAVS
8) The ship will also carry self sacrificing drones comparible to extended range HARPY units.
