Felixstowe a/c wreckage washed ashore – identification help

A strange assumption is being made from aircraft wreckage being washed ashore on Felixstowe East Beach , that because “there are some flush-riveted parts” it is thought to be a “US plane”.

Because the tidal action has scoured away the paint, identification is difficult, though in the picture in the Evening Star newspaper of 28th January, the parts look as though they are painted sand colour unless it really is encrusted sand!

The person who would like to know is Sue Tod of Felixstowe Museum. Sorry I don’t know contact details and I don‘t have scanning facility.

Wreckage ID

Hi Rocketeer

I’ve found an aircraft leading edge on Sizewell beach several years ago and identified it as being from a “US aircraft” by the type of rivets used and the size of section.

Did you get any photos of the parts from Felixtowe? I will photo the leading edge and post here.

Evening Star newspaper of February 11th reports that on of the sons of the town and test engineer at Boscombe Down is taking selected parts to Hendon to compare them with parts of the Lancaster there.

A plaque on the town hall honours the Lanc. crew of the Methwold based plane that ditched 1,200 yards off shore who were lost.

Tee hee! That’s me!! Went to Hendon today and although scouring the Lanc and Wellington, nothing conclusive…so I will be looking harder for part numbers!!

Quite a good day though…Hendon then Science Museum to look at Spit exhibition (will post photos later) then to IWM to see remains of Holme’s Buck Palace Rd Hurri (hidden amongst the Childrens war exhibition now).
