According to a recent article in the Swiss Aero Club Review, Fieseler Storch A-97 is due to fly again in November 2016. It was built by Fieseler at Kassel in 1943. In use by the Luftwaffe, on a flight from Munich on 19 March 1943 it diverted to Samedan in Switzerland due to bad weather. It was transferred to the Swiss Air Force and served until 1963, before being housed in the Lucerne Transport Museum from 1965. It is famous as being one of the aircraft used in the rescue from the Gauli Glacier on 19 November 1946 of all passengers and crew of C-53 42-68846 which had crashed on the glacier. A-97 is being refurbished for flight to mark the 70th anniversary of the rescue.

It’s good to see a museum aircraft that is not forever ‘preserved in aspic’ after being assigned to a museum of, I presume, primarily static exhibits. Perhaps the Swiss might set an example to other countries. Anyone for getting Alcock & Brown’s Vimy out of South Kensington and into the air in three years time?
Out of interest, how original is the Vimy ?
