Fifties British War films: Days of Glory

Anyone see it? It was on BBC 4 and cover the likes of The Dambusters, The Great Escape, The Cruel Sea etc and covered some of the making of them, fascinating stuff and some interesting anecdotes….. They are also showing some of the films, it was followed by The Wooden Horse..

Fifties British War films: Days of Glory

I’d just like to add to the comments above about what a great documentary it was, and is. I thought it was a model of how to make a documentary and have written a bit more here:-

I found The Aviation Forum by accident so thanks for the good work.

Yes, indeed. I too commented elsewhere. It was a lesson on how these sorts of programmes should be written and presented. And most importantly he dealt with the films in their time not with hindsight. Those of us who do remember them first time round were in our early teens and a few of us were young adults but most members were too young or not even born. Remembering the films in their context is so important and Heffer, unsurprisingly, did so very well indeed.

And tonight and tomorrow on BBC4 repeats of “Operation Crossbow” and “Operation Mincemeat”.

Love Them – now.

Yes, – Excellent. I made comment on some of these films in another thread. As a young man, I thought them rather corny, and horribly B&W. Now I see them quite differently. They were made relatively soon after the events, so the ‘feel’ is very good. The ‘attitude’, voices and accents are right too of course, as is, generally, the equipment, – more or less. Todays films can do better for colour, SFX etc. Modern stuff tends to struggle to depict the actual generation represented correctly.
It’s very gratifying when they do get things right though. 🙂
