Fighter Meet

Because of the popularity of my thread on Mildenhall Air Fete no longer being in exsistance and the amount of comments and piccy’s of days gone by, I thought it would be a good idea to see if the response was just as good for the days of the Fighter Meet’s that were held just down the road from Duxford at North Weald. If you wanted to see an airdisplay with lots of classic fighters and loud explosions this was the one to be at!

Lets see who can produce some photo’s of the good old days of Fighter Meet when the fire balls were like mini atom bomb mushroom clouds going off!

Thanks for the 94 date, were all the Fighter Meet shows at North Weald two day events?

I believe they were.I know the Express newspapers used to give away a free special newspaper at the weekend as well.

Yes indeed a brilliant show and sorely missed i was a North Weald Squadron member at the time and attended them all.Harvard formation team,Gary Numan playing the baddie in his Jap painted G-AZSC.The Concorde and Vulcan formation flypast, great memories i dont recall why it stopped but in my opinion was a fabulous show at a still much underused and historic venue.

North Weald did have a Fighter Meet for many years ,Ah yes i went to nearly all the Fighter Meets ,started by Paul Warren Wilson , John Watts ,and Arthur Gibson ,those were the days ,what did kill off the Fighter meet ? i think it was the Policing Costs of the Event ,but many say it was the loss of the Market Stall revenue to Epping Council ,a great Airshow ,sadly missed

Cheers Terry

Like a rubber ball…

I have this exact (and very exiting,BTW) shot in a book called “Spirits in the Sky” (German Edition).
It states that all photographs in there are by Patrick Bounce.
Hope this helps

Flo,

That’ll be Patrick Bunce. A fine photographer.

Many thanks.

🙂 Hope these bring back some memories, sorry about the quality.I still feel sorry for the poor Pilatus and Me108 that ended up being the “bad” guys and shot down many many times over by assorted Spitfires and P51’s LOL. 😀

It’s interesting to see one of the piccys Mark12 has used in his post of piccys of the Fighter Meet. I’ll put it in myself to remind you!

If only we knew then, what we know now!!

Why was Alan Partridge riding in a P40?

When I look back at the Fighter Meet pictures, it strikes me how much has changed since those (not so distant) days, and the empty ranks of now-missing crew and aeroplanes.

Cracking shots!

Nice to see some from days gone by. 🙂

Love those form inside the P40!

Must dig out the slides Dad took at the 1989 show.

I seem to Remember Hanna snr giving a rather spirited display in the Buchon that year. 😀

Cheers

North Weald

I have loads of slides of the pyro’s but can’t reproduce them here. I recall that at one display, the explosives failed to go off and had to be detonated after the show, the resulting blast nearly burning my face. During a scenario involving military vehicles one of them was positioned too near to the blast and caught fire.
The strafing sequence was interesting, the first time I saw it the charges were lined up heading straight for me and I cr***d myself, there was also a dodgy looking sequence involving flak bursting around Moose that was quite interesting.
Down at the fighter pan, I witnessed the near demise of Stephen Grey, Paul Day had been frantically trying to start the BBMF spitfire and it eventually fired just as Stephen walked past the prop, then stopped, the exchanged looks were interesting to say the least.
I should be off to Duxford today but the weather looks grim and I’ve cut my hand making driving difficult so this will be the first show missed for years.

Fighter Meet – North Weald – 30 June 1984

A good opportunity to dig out the old negatives, dust them down, scan them to the new filing system and try to improve a little on what was a fairly mediocre bunch.

The trouble with North Weald was the best shots always seemed to be into sun but then with the sun behind you it was hard not to capture the crowd line. I seem to remember there was one spot, were they taxied in, that was the optimum position for the late afternoon.

For sure, cameras and results have moved on in twenty years. 🙂
