What with the recent Hollywood trend for remakes, and the announcement recently that Peter Jackson will be lending his producing capabilities to a remake of The Dam Busters, I was wondering what people’s opinions were on the recent glut of remakes – and which, if any, were half-decent?
I can think of a couple of remakes that did warrant purchase on DVD:
King Kong (2005)
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
And more than a few that I’d rather forget about:
Psycho (1998)
The Omen (2006)

And in 1922,Nosferatu kicked off the vampire story……. ;)[/QUOTE]
See, I wondered whether to include the 1922 Nosferatu (which itself was remade back in 1979), since it wasn’t a “proper” version of Stoker’s Dracula story – unlike the 1931 Bela Lugosi version, which had much more in common with the novel.
In case some of you don’t know, Nosferatu was basically an unofficial film version of Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula, and because the film-makers could not get the rights to the Stoker material, they made their own version, changing the characters and settings to something a little more German. But, someone noticed the similarities between the two stories, so Stoker’s widow ordered all prints of the German film destroyed – but some copies of it slipped the net and survived. It’s even available on DVD these days!
But, as I said, since it’s not a “proper” retelling of Stoker’s story, in keeping characters and locations essentially similar, I wasn’t sure whether to include this and the subsequent 1931 Dracula at all (although, since the character is supposed to be Dracula, you could include it….)

Just a quicky before I go to bed 😉
Ben Hur…1907….15 mins….black and white….silent….main cast of two,centered on a chariot race.
Ben Hur….1959….212 mins….colour….70mm six track sound….a cast of thousands….has a start,a middle and an end to the story.
What a difference 52 years makes.IMHO the ultimate remake……………so far 😉
And in 1922,Nosferatu kicked off the vampire story……. 😉

I don’t think its a recent trend for Hollywood to remake films they’ve been doing it for years Three men and a baby, the vanishing and nikita all remade from European cinema and mostly altered to fit he American tastes of happy endings hero wins formula.
True, it’s perhaps not a recent trend, but it’s become increasingly obvious in the past ten years.
But, if you want to go way, way back…. The 1930 version of The Dawn Patrol (starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr.) was remade in 1938 with Basil Rathbone, David Niven and Errol Flynn…!

The Ring was a remake of a Japanese film…
The latest film “Sahara” was not a remake of the 1943 film.
Cussler’s book dates from at least 30 years later and that is what the book was based on.
I’m with holty – CC is a damn good author.

Placenta man in ” War of the Worlds “…ok not a direct remake …the special effects were very good, Tim Robbins was brilliant, and i suppose it wasnt the worst…

There are a few too many remakes lately seems the Studio’s are scared to take a chance with a new idea, Its cheaper and easier just to remake something, Its a shame.
I liked remakes of
Oceans Eleven
Italian Job
Thomas Crown Affair
Really Hated remakes of
Alfie( Jude Law could not even clean Michael Caines shoes, Let alone step in to them)
Get Carter(Was best left in the 1960s and in England).

How about movies we would like to see remakes of, such as Top Gun…but this time with real Mig-29 aircraft (either from a NATO member or CGI) or maybe Jaws with a CGI great white instead of a clumsy looking robot?
The remake of “The Fog” is pretty good, as is the BSG series and the new “Amityvile” horror. Haven’t seen the remake of “The Omen” but it looked good.
Some of the upcoming movies such as “Abominable” (it’s a horror about the Yeti) look lame and begs the question ‘Is Hollywood running out of ideas’….as for the remake of “The Dam Busters”…please, please, please don’t say Hollywood is gonna make out that a Yank was behind it all 🙁

The Italian Job – not a true remake but I thought it wasn’t too bad personally. I watched with an open mind and found I liked it.
The LadyKillers – I’ve not seen the Tom Hanks version and have been told best that I keep it that way.
